On this World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, global health leaders are warning that the COVID-19 pandemic is threatening to derail efforts to reduce the burden of what was, until recently, the world's top infectious cause of death.According to preliminary data from 84 countries compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 1.4 million fewer people received TB care in 2020 than in 2019, as TB case notifications fell by 21% globally.
The decline in TB case notifications in 10 high-burden countries was 28%, with the biggest declines seen in Indonesia (42%), South Africa (41%), the Philippines (37%), and India (25%).Fewer case notifications means fewer TB patients being diagnosed and receiving proper care.
