A government spokesperson said ministers have no plans to activate the Covid Plan B winter strategy - despite a rise in Covid cases and deaths.
Yesterday (Tuesday) it was reported a further 223 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 - the highest number of daily deaths since March.
The seven-day average for coronavirus cases in the UK stands at 44,145 a day, one of the highest in the world. It has led to some calls for "Plan B" - which Sajid Javid said could be used in the event of a coroanvirus surge - to be implemented.
The head of the NHS Confederation has urged the government to reintroduce coronavirus rules or risk ''stumbling into a crisis" this winter.
