PHILADELPHIA - A new shelter that prioritizes transgender women of color is opening in North Philadelphia at the beginning of October.The Ark of Safety LGBTQ+ Safe Haven is an 8-bed emergency shelter that will also support four permanent beds for a rapid rehousing program. The shelter, which is set to open on October 3, was founded by a trans woman who said she was inspired to open a safe haven like this because it would have helped her decades ago. Tatyana Woodard, founder and Executive Director of Ark of Safety LGBTQ+ Safe Haven, left home when she was just 14 years old.

PHILADELPHIA - A man accused of two sexual assaults on SEPTA platforms that happened minutes apart was charged on Monday, days after he reportedly turned himself in. The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office charged 25-year-old Raymond Nunez with multiple offenses, including stalking, harassment, and indecent assault. The charges stem from two sexual assault incidents that happened on SEPTA platforms along the Broad Street Line in South Philadelphia on Monday.Officials say the first happened about 10:30 Monday night at the City Hall platform. Kentucky high school is "infested" after a snake and a mouse fell from classroom ceilings last week, according to a teacher. Nathan Spalding, an English teacher at Henry Clay High School in Lexington, wrote on Facebook that he found a baby rat snake that fell from the ceiling and appeared to "cuddle" his desk phone."Our school is infested with roaches, spiders, and mice," Spalding wrote. COLOMBO (News 1st) – The police fired tear gas and aimed water cannons at Socialist Youth Union protestors who were engaged in a protest in the Maradana area against the Government's repressive measures.The protestors initiated the march under the theme of re-energizing the people's protests and returning the power of the youth to Colombo.The police previously announced that although the protest march was due to start from near the Lipton Roundabout in Colombo, they cannot allow it.The Police said that 84 people have been detained by Sri Lanka Police for taking part in the protest organized by the Socialist Youth Union.Several protestors who were injured during the protest were brought to Colombo National Hospital for treatment as well.

PHILADELPHIA - South Street experienced another night of violence after shots rang out on the popular Philadelphia street this weekend.Police say a fight between a group of men and women erupted into gunfire on the 400 block of South Street around 12:45 a.m. Saturday.A man in his early 20s was found on the ground, shot multiple times, when police in the area responded to the sound of shots being fired.

OAK FOREST, Ill. - The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed four people are dead in connection to a barricade situation and house fire in Oak Forest Friday morning. Oak Forest police responded to domestic disturbance call at a home in the 5500 block of Ann Marie Lane around 6:35 a.m.When police arrived they found two victims with gunshot wounds in the driveway and a third victim in the roadway south of the home. Police pulled the victims into their squad cars and transferred them to a safer location to render aid. The victims were then taken to a local hospital where they were treated and later died. Police and other law enforcement officials established a perimeter around the home where the suspect was barricaded.

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - A 22-year-old man has been charged, by the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, in connection with the melee that resulted in two people shot near Temple University, while a large crowd was nearby.Officials say 22-year-old Troy Mullen was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and other related charges for an incident early on the morning of September 17th.According to authorities, the incident happened at 16th Street and Cecil B. Moore Saturday morning, about 12:30 a.m.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lanka is currently facing its worse economic crisis, and people who cannot afford to pay a high cost for fuel have been forced to use public transport, especially the jam-packed trains.News 1st's Teena Marian filed this report during her early morning commute to work.The Colombo-bound train from Polgahawela was already packed like cans of sardines when it reached one of the busiest train stations on the coastal route this morning.As the train reached the platform, commuters rushed to the doors trying to creep inside the already packed compartments to make their way to Colombo for school and work.The train on its journey to Colombo passed many other stations, and some passengers waiting to board the train simply had to look on as the packed train passed by with no room for more passengers.For many, this has been the case for decades and more additional compartments is a paramount need.News 1st's inquiries from authorities at Sri Lanka Railways on why this perennial issue has gone unresolved despite footage and images of packed trains going viral for decades went unanswered.Overcrowded public transport is now the norm, as many hang off footboards for their lives and livelihoods.

Antler River Elementary School on Chippewas of the Thames First Nation (COTTFN), located just west of London, Ont., will have to wait until at least early October before they can return to the classroom as the community contends with an uptick in COVID-19 cases.Officials with the Chippewas of the Thames Board of Education confirmed in a social media post on Thursday that the school would be closed for at least six school days, with a planned reopening date of Oct. 3.The closure comes in response to a recommendation from Chippewa Health Centre after the school saw a high number of student and staff absences on Wednesday due to illness, said the board of education’s director of lifelong learning, Joette Lefebvre, in a statement.The school was forced to close on Wednesday as a result, and remained closed on Thursday, according to a post on the school’s Facebook page.

PASADENA, Calif. - A 13-year-old blind dog who fell into a construction hole in Pasadena is safe and was reunited with its owner Tuesday. Rescuers were sent to the 700 block of North Lake Avenue, the former site of a Carl's Jr. restaurant, at 6:50 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA - Home Depot workers in Philadelphia have filed a petition with the federal labor board to form what could be the first store-wide union at the world's largest home improvement retailer.The petition, filed with the National Labor Relations Board this week, seeks to form a collective bargaining unit for 274 employees who work in merchandising, specialty and operations. The federal agency's database shows no other attempts to form a store-wide union at the company, though a group of Home Depot drivers successfully unionized with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in 2019.Sara Gorman, a Home Depot spokesperson, said the company is aware the filing and "we look forward to talking to our associates about their concerns.""While we will of course work through the NLRB process, we do not believe unionization is the best solution for our associates," Gorman said in an email.Vincent Quiles, a store employee who is leading the petition, did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
