PHILADELPHIA - A funeral is being held for Temple University Police Sergeant Chris Fitzgerald on Friday, marking nearly one week since he was fatally shot while chasing a suspect near campus last week. A viewing and service is being held at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and will be followed by an interment at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Huntingdon Valley. Investigators say Fitzgerald, 31, was on patrol alone on Saturday night around 7 p.m. on the 1700 block of Montgomery Avenue when he saw three young people dressed in dark clothes with masks.

Temple University will cover cost of Sgt. Fitzgerald's funeral, offers to pay children's tuition

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University announced it will pay the funeral costs for slain officer Sgt. Chris Fitzgerald and pay for the tuition's of his five children if they attend Temple.Fitzgerald, 31, was shot to death on Saturday night during a struggle with a suspect later identified as 18-year-old Miles Pfeffer. The teen was arrested at his mother's house less that 24-hours after the deadly shooting and faces a slew of charges, including murder. "It's unfathomable how his joy has led to so much pain for all who knew and loved him," Temple University President Jason Wingard said.

Running club of slain Temple officer carries on weekly run with heavy hearts: 'His death won't go in vain'

PHILADELPHIA - The tight-knit running community that once embraced slain Temple police officer Chris Fitzgerald carried on their weekly run with a heavy heart. A group of avid runners gathered along Kelly Drive Wednesday for their weekly 5-mile-run without Officer Fitzgerald, who was shot to death during a struggle with a suspect Saturday night. Officer Fitzgerald was an active member of the Swagger House Run Club and the Philadelphia Chapter of Black Men Run. "It’s all about brotherhood, all about unity, it’s all about health," Lawrence Harrington from Black Men Run, Philadelphia told FOX 29. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe group took Wednesday night's run through four different parts of the city: Fairmount, Franklintown, Spring Garden and Sharswood. "We go through neighborhoods that need to see black men more active more healthy and more constructive," Vice Captain of Black Men Run, Philadelphia George Morse said. Officer Fitzgerald was an active member of the Swagger House Run Club and the Philadelphia Chapter of Black Men Run. Joshua Perez, a fellow runner who will be a pall bearer at Officer Fitzgerald's funeral, said tonight's run was therapeutic for his grieving process. He said he will carry on ever step of Officer Fitzgerald's mission of peace, love and health."His death won’t go in vain," Perez said.

PHILADELPHIA - Officials have released details for the funeral of Officer Chris Fitzgerald, who was shot and killed on the job near campus over the weekend.The father-of-four was gunned down during a struggle with a suspect near 18th Street and Montgomery Avenue in North Philadelphia. He later died at Temple University Hospital.
