PHILADELPHIA - A North Philadelphia community is grappling with the loss of a recently-opened grocery store after a stolen car crashed into the building, police say. According to officials, the stolen vehicle crashed into the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market on N American Street early Sunday morning. Crews remove a stolen vehicle from the inside of a Grocery Outlet Bargain Market in North Philadelphia.  Philadelphia police say the driver of the stolen vehicle did get injured in the crash, but no additional information was released. FOX 29 was at the supermarket's grand opening in North Philadelphia in July 2022. The neighborhood was considered a food desert prior to the opening of the store, which provided residents with quality groceries nearby. The front entrance to the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market in North Philadelphia is blocked off after a stolen vehicle crashed into the building.  MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe next closest grocery store is more than a mile away and is known for high prices, according to residents. The store owner says they are unsure how long it will be closed but hope to reopen as soon as possible.

PHILADELPHIA - A 19-year-old woman ended up in the hospital after police say her boyfriend's firearm went off inside an apartment Sunday afternoon.The shooting happened on the 1400 block of 15th Street, which is located just blocks from Temple University campus in North Philadelphia. WILDWOOD, N.J. - One of New Jersey's most popular shore towns has banned alcohol on the beach and boardwalk just days before the unofficial start of summer. Leaders in Wildwood unanimously passed an ordinance that immediately bans the possession of alcohol on the beach and boardwalk.This new ordinance not only prohibits the drinking and/or open display of alcohol, but also says the mere existence of any kind of alcohol is prohibited," Wildwood Mayor Pete Bryron said. Designated restaurants or permitted events on the beach and boardwalk are the only exceptions to the new rules, according to a press released shared by the city Thursday. The ordinance that passed in Wildwood mirrors edicts currently in other shore towns that aim to crack down on possession and consumption on the beach and boardwalk.Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski said drinking in the sun on vacation "often leads to excess and unruly behavior, not to mention health risks." "This is a matter of public safety," Commissioner Mikulski said.

CHICORA, Pa. - A Pennsylvania nurse is facing charges connected to the death of two patients and the hospitalization of a third, according to the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office. Authorities say the nurse, identified as 40-year-old Heather Pressdee of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, gave lethal doses of unnecessary medication to patients, resulting in their deaths. According to officials, the alleged incidents took place at Quality Life Services, a skilled nursing facility in Chicora, where Presdee was a registered nurse. Presdee is facing charges in the deaths of a 55-year-old man and an 83-year-old in addition to the hospitalization of a 73-year-old man, authorities say. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESInvestigators say the victims were under Pressdee's care when they received overdoses of insulin that caused medical emergencies and the deaths of two patients. The two men died on December 4, 2022, and December 25, 2022, per officials. Authorities say two of the three men were not diabetic. Pressdee was taken into custody on Wednesday and was arraigned on charges before being sent to the Butler County Prison, officials say. She has been charged with two counts of homicide, a count of attempted murder, a count of aggravated assault, three counts of neglect of a care-dependent person and three counts of reckless endangerment, the AG's Office says. 

PHILADELPHIA - A crash on a Philadelphia street is being investigated as the result of a police chase involving a stolen vehicle, authorities say. Officers with the Philadelphia Police Department were chasing a car that was reportedly stolen.The vehicle believed to be involved in the chase was later found damaged in the area of 56th and Media Streets. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESFOX 29's cameras were rolling as police surveyed the damage to a parked car in the area. No injuries have been reported at this time. Police have not released any details on the circumstances of the crash. This is a developing story.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities are investigating two deadly broad daylight shootings in Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon that they say happened just 10 minutes apart.The spate of deadly violence happened just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of Gratz Street and Susquehanna Avenue when police say two people were shot. Both victims, ages 28 and 31, were driven to Temple University Hospital after they were each shot several times.

President Biden’s plan to forgo more than $400 billion in federally backed student loan debt.Lawmakers approved a resolution disapproving of Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan that was announced last year and is now stalled because of an ongoing legal challenge. California is grieving after a good Samaritan was struck and killed by a car when he helped a mother duck and several of her ducklings cross a busy intersection on Thursday evening.Casey Rivara was reportedly hit by a teenage driver at the intersection of Stanford Ranch Road and Park Drive in Rocklin, Calif., local police announced.Rivara, 41, reportedly parked his own vehicle at the intersection when he noticed the waddling ducks struggling to cross the street where the speed limit reaches 45 kilometres per hour. Others waiting at the intersection took photos of Rivara as he bent over to guide the line of eight to 10 ducklings to safety.Many onlookers clapped, honked and cheered for Rivara at the stopped intersection, as per the Washington Post.Though the mama duck and her fuzzy ducklings reached the sidewalk unharmed, Rivara was hit before he could return to his vehicle.

COLLINGWOOD, N.J. - A New Jersey high school opened a wellness center to help students navigate mental and emotional struggles felt by teens in their formative years. Backed by a federal grant, the wellness center at Collingswood High School is staffed by licensed counselors ready to assist "overwhelmed" and "stressed out" students. "Almost every student who walks in the space has been overwhelmed by something, stressed out by something," Wellness Center Director Kristin O'Lexy told FOX 29. The center is a cell phone-free space with welcoming pastel-colored walls and soft background music.

DEPTFORD, N.J. - A man put a police officer in a chokehold before a bystander came to his aid during a struggle at a New Jersey mall, police said.Deptford Township police said officers were sent to the Deptford Mall just after 7:30 p.m. Friday on a report of a disorderly man allegedly harassing patrons.A uniformed officer found the man on the second floor of the mall and asked him to leave multiple times but he refused to do so and "allegedly became confrontational," eventually taking a fighting stance, police said.As the officer tried to arrest him on defiant trespass and disorderly conduct charges, a struggle ensued during which the man was able to put a chokehold on the officer, "effectively cutting off" his blood and oxygen supply, police said.During the struggle, a bystander interceded and helped the officer escape the chokehold and get the man into handcuffs, police said.
