PHILADELPHIA - Vehicle thefts in Philadelphia have nearly doubled from this point last year and criminals are targeting two specific car brands, according to the latest data from police. The Philadelphia Police Department said there have been more than 9,000 vehicle thefts so far this year and half of those have involved Kias and Hyundais. "Obviously this is a major concern for us, the stolen cars out there lead to a lot of things, some are just joyriding others are used in crimes," Chief Walter Smith said.To prevent the growing trend, 21 districts from around Philadelphia came together Wednesday to hand out vehicle locks to Kia and Hyundai owners. While using sonar equipment to find the best spot to cast his reel at Cheney Lake, he found a Jeep buried underwater. Turned out the Jeep was stolen and is now a part of a criminal investigation. Police: Teenage girl, man shot less than 1 mile apart in Kensington

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating two shootings in Kensington that happened less than one mile apart from each other on Thursday night. According to authorities, officers with the 24th District responded to the 3100 block of G Street around 10:25 p.m.Responding officers found a 15-year-old girl shot once in each thigh, officials say. She was transported to Temple Hospital by police, where she was placed in critical but stable condition. MORE LOCAL HEADLINES Minutes later, officers from the same district responded to the 800 block of E Allegheny Avenue, which is less than one mile away form the shooting scene on G Street. Police say a 29-year-old man was shot in the right calf and transported to Temple Hospital, where he was placed in stable condition. Authorities say no weapons were found and no arrests were made in either shooting. Officials have not said if the shootings are connected. This is a developing story.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a shooting on a Kensington street, where police say a teenage shooting victim was found. According to authorities, just after 10 p.m. on Thursday, police were dispatched to the 800 block of E Allegheny Avenue for a report of gunshots. Officials say responding officers found a 15-year-old girl lying on G Street with a gunshot wound to both thighs. She was transported to Temple University Hospital, where she is in critical condition, but expected to survive, police say. Chief Inspector Scott Small says about 15 minutes later, police heard gunshots as they were investigating the scene. Officers ran in the direction and found a 25-year-old man firing shots, police say. MORE LOCAL HEADLINES According to Small, officers were able to get him to lay down and hand over his weapon. Police say he was also shot in both legs and taken to Temple University Hospital, where he is in stable condition. Officials say investigators believe he was the one who was firing shots on the 800 block of E Allegheny, where the teenage girl was struck. The man was also taken into custody, police say. According to investigators, 14 spent shell casings were found at the scene. Police say cars on E Allegheny Avenue were also struck by gunfire. This is a developing story.
