COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said the loss of tourism and remittances from expatriate workers, alongside the cost of healthcare programs, and provisions of welfare for those whose lives were affected by the pandemic have combined with rising global inflation, and our historic debt servicing obligation created a challenging situation for Sri Lanka today.President Rajapaksa speaking at the fifth Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit in Colombo noted “However, I am confident, together with the remarkable strength and resilience of the people, tried and tested over time, and the cooperation of regional and international partners, Sri Lanka will prevail over these difficulties and engineer rapid economic recovery.”He appreciated the support of several BIMSTEC states in the aforementioned endeavor.“Enhanced cooperation between member states will be necessary not only for economic recovery but also for greater economic prosperity, better public health, and improved regional resilience in the long-term,” said the President noting he is confident of achieving these aspirations.“The signing of the BIMCTEC charter will be a significant step towards increasing the organization’s role, not just within the region, but also as a driving force in global affairs,” he noted.He said that the Bay of Bengal Region is increasingly important for global connectivity and trade, adding that the international shipping lines that navigate through these waters help keep the engines of the global economy running.President Rajapaksa said it is essential for nations to work together to ensure that the threats to these waters and regional states are curtailed.“Such

New Delhi (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India, Milinda Moragoda sought ways and means of further enhancing cooperation with India in the power and renewable energy sector, when he met the Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy of India Shri Raj Kumar Singh in New Delhi.Minister Singh, recalling the age-old close relations between India and Sri Lanka, extended a warm welcome to High Commissioner Moragoda.The Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy of India and the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka discussed a range of issues pertaining to bilateral cooperation in the power and renewable energy sector.The discussion focused on the ways and means to deepen and broaden the long-term strategic cooperation in the sector as well as short and medium- term projects to enhance interactions between the two nations.In this context, the progress of the projects under the Line of Credit of USD 100 million extended by India in June 2021 was reviewed.This Line of Credit, extended through the Exim Bank of India finance various projects in the solar energy sector in Sri Lanka including those announced during the founding conference of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) held in March 2018, such as rooftop solar photovoltaic systems for households and government buildings.Further, the proposed Sampur solar power plant, for which the agreement was inked just last week between the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) of India and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), was also discussed by the Minister of Power and the High Commissioner.

CEB & India’s NTPC ink agreement to jointly develop Sampur Solar Power Plant
COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s CEB and India’s largest integrated energy company, NTPC signed the agreement for the joint development of the 100 MW Sampur Solar Power Plant yesterday (11).The Indian High Commission stated that the High Commissioner attend the signing of the agreement, along with 4 Ministers including the Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa and the newly-appointed Minister of Energy, Pavithra Wanniarachchi.In a press release, the Indian High commission noted that during the visit of Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa to India last year, both sides had resolved to enhance investments from India in various sectors in Sri Lanka that would contribute to growth and expand employment, and the Sampur Solar Power Project is an important step in this direction.The Ministers attested to the strength of India-Sri Lanka economic partnership for mutual prosperity, including through cooperation in renewable energy, the High Commission added.Moreover, the High Commission noted that cooperation with Sri Lanka in this domain will only become stronger with the implementation of the US$ 100 million Line of Credit offered by India to Sri Lanka for development of solar power projects in Sri Lanka. Similarly, there is significant interest among private sector on both sides for cooperation in renewable energy which is likely to increase in the coming years.High Commissioner was delighted to attend the signing of the JVSHA between @ntpclimited & @CEB_lk today for the joint development of a solar power plant at Sampur.

PAKISTAN: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday (24) underlined the need for capitalizing on immense goodwill that exists between Pakistan and Sri Lanka by expanding cooperation across diverse areas, including trade and investment, tourism, culture, education, defense, and agriculture.In a meeting with Sri Lankan Minister of Trade Dr Bandula Gunawardhana and State Minister for Regional Cooperation Tharaka Balasuriya, Qureshi highlighted the importance of strengthening existing fraternal relations between the two countries through high-level exchanges.Recalling Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Sri Lanka in February last year, the foreign minister stressed that efforts must be made to enhance bilateral trade relations through optimal utilisation of the Pakistan-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (FTA).This he added, can be done by expanding interaction between the business communities on both sides, getting into joint ventures and making investments in high potential sectors.Qureshi said that deepening economic cooperation through proactive economic diplomacy was among government’s top priorities in the context of its policy focus on geo-economics.During the meeting, both sides agreed to continue close collaboration in multilateral fora and to strengthen regional cooperation.Reciprocating the foreign minister’s sentiments, Dr Gunawardhana thanked the Government of Pakistan for its warm hospitality and its goodwill towards Sri Lanka at all levels.He also appreciated Pakistan’s consistent friendship and support for Sri Lanka, noting that the visit was aimed at further advancing mutually-beneficial economic and trade relations.He added that Sri Lanka was keen on expanding ties in various sectors,
