New symptomatic Covid cases have soared in the past week, with the UK averaging nearly 70,000 cases each day - a rise of 15,000 in just seven days.

Latest data from the Zoe Covid Symptom Study reveal that 69,958 symptomatic cases are identified each day. A week ago this figure was 55,226 - a 27 per cent rise compared to a week earlier.

The number is based on swab test data, researchers said. It is now estimated that the UK's R rate - the rate at which the virus is spreading - is 1.2, meaning every 10 infected people infect 12 in total.

In England R is 1.1, in Wales it is 1.0, and in Scotland it is 1.3, experts believe. Have you been affected by coronavirus directly?
