Six African countries will be put on England's travel 'red list' imminently due to concerns about a new covid variant officials said is the 'worst one we’ve seen so far'.

UK scientists sounded the alarm on Thursday night over the B.1.1.529 variant, which some experts believe can reduce the effectiveness of vaccines to as little as 30 per cent.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the new variant identified in South Africa 'may be more transmissible' than the Delta strain and 'the vaccines that we currently have may be less effective'.
