COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, traditionally a joyous period of celebration and festivities, dawned this year amidst many challenges faced by Sri Lankans. The shortage of fuel, gas, essential medicine and food all accumulated to formulate the Economic Crisis which Sri Lanka is currently undergoing, which had left the population reeling, the Cabinet Ministers in charge of critical subjects resigning, and nobody to take accountability for the crisis as the Parliament, which convened for several days, also concluding their sessions without any resolutions with regard to the people’s problems. This had led to masses engaging in protests in front of the Presidential Secretariat for the sixth day in a row today (14), as the farmers mark the New Year, traditionally celebrated in line with bountiful harvests, this time, without fertilizer, rice being purchased at low prices, and paddy fields abandoned with weeds. However, amid crises, Sri Lankans still managed to welcome the New Year by wishing prosperity to the country and all of Sri Lanka’s children. The ritual of ‘boiling milk’ was held at the Independence square and Galle Face both amid protests, while the protestors also engaged in the New Year ritual of ‘visiting relatives’ by walking from Independence Square to Galle Face, and proceeded to greet the Police who were guarding the Presidential Secretariat with betel leaves. Moreover, many avurudu celebrations such as avurudu games were held with a twist at Galle Face, which were creatively designed to convey the thoughts and complaints of the protesting public at the venue. One such youth, speaking to News 1st, stated that “They have decided to ruin our Avurudu, therefore we are ruining them for Avurudu”

NEW YORK - Frank R. James, 62, the sole suspect in the shooting of 10 people aboard an N train in Sunset Park will be arraigned Thursday in federal court in downtown Brooklyn. James faces federal terrorism-related charges and could spend the rest of his life in prison if found guilty of throwing smoke grenades and opening fire on a crowded train during the morning rush earlier in the week.After a 30-hour manhunt, James was arrested without incident after a tipster — thought by police to be James himself — said he could be found near a McDonald’s on the Lower East Side.

DARBY, Pa. - An employee of St. Francis Country House is facing charges after they were accused of assaulting an elderly resident earlier this week. On Monday at around 5 p.m., Darby Borough police say they were dispatched to the nursing home on Lansdowne Ave. Upon arrival, officers say they met with an employee of the nursing home who told them that a nurse witnessed a nursing assistant, later identified as Ednise Dulcio, strike a resident. Police say the incident was caught on video, and that Dulcio can be seen striking a 92-year-old resident with an open hand while the resident was sitting in their wheelchair. After speaking with the witness, police say they learned that Dulcio struck the resident prior to the incident that was captured on video. Authorities say Dulcio was arrested in her home on Tuesday around 3:30 p.m.

(Miami-Dade Corrections) MIAMI - Police in South Florida arrested a mother accused of murdering her two young children in their apartment after officers responded to repeated 911 hang-up calls coming from the home and found the bodies of both children tied up on a bed."Come get them, I don't want them anymore," 41-year-old Odette Lysse Joassaint told officers who responded to the scene on Tuesday night, according to the arrest report. Police said she appeared to be irrational.The officers entered the apartment and found a 3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl.

James who they believe is the renter of the U-Haul van.

PHILADELPHIA - It’s not uncommon to hear about cash thefts at gas stations, but one gas station owner says they are dealing with candy thieves—and it’s getting out of control.Early Tuesday morning, just before 3:45 AM, surveillance cameras at PnP Gas on East Hunting Park Avenue say their surveillance cameras captured two people loading up bags of their candy.The store owner says when the pair tried to leave without paying for it, and realized an employee locked them in, they broke the door to escape."It’s very, very frustrating," store manager James Gill said.Philadelphia police are investigating a series of candy thefts at gas stations. Store employees believe one man is consistently behind the crimes and others will help.

Delaware State Police arrest 50-year-old Richard Cook for his 8th DUI offense.  GEORGETOWN, Del. - Delaware State Police arrested a man and charged him with his eighth DUI offense after a crash on Monday. On April 11, just before 3:00 p.m., state troopers responded to an accident in Georgetown, Del. Police say when they arrived to the scene, they found a black Nissan Quest, which had overturned onto its side in a wooded area near Dupont Boulevard. Police say Richard Cook, 50, was behind the wheel and two passengers, a 49-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, both sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Bayhealth Sussex Hospital. Police conducted a DUI investigation and took Cook in to custody at the scene. After searching Cook's vehicle, police say they found 2.04 grams of marijuana, suspected liquid heroin, drug paraphernalia, 2 fixed-knife blades, and a firearm. Authorities learned that Cook's driver's license was suspended, and he had been convicted for seven prior DUI offenses. He was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, and other related offenses. Cook was committed on a $39,501 cash bond.

Mostly made up of Gen-Z youth, the protestors have over the past week created a township right in front of the President’s Office, in the middle of the bustling Colombo City.The town, now called ‘Gota-go-Gama’ (which incorporates the main slogan used by protestors and the word gama, which means village in Sinhalese) now functions with working toilets, phone charging points, entertainment, a shop, and even a library.

Frank Deshields, 52, of New Castle is being sought in connection to the fatal stabbing of a man outside of a New Castle motel.  NEW CASTLE, Del. - Police in Delaware are searching for a suspect accused of fatally stabbing a man outside of a motel in New Castle on Sunday. According to Delaware State Police, 52-year-old Frank Deshields is being sought by authorities. Police say troopers responded to The Super Lodge on West Avenue for a reported stabbing. According to authorities, troopers found a 45-year-old New Castle man outside of the motel with a stab wound to his upper torso. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities say. Investigators say Deshields is a suspect in the case and an arrest warrant was obtained for first-degree murder and weapon charges. The investigation is active and ongoing, according to authorities.

NEW YORK - Leniz Escobar, who went by the same ‘Diablita’ or ‘little devil’ on social media, was found guilty on all counts Monday for luring a group of young men to a wooded area in Central Islip in 2017 where they were beaten and hacked to death with machetes, knives, and tree limbs by more than a dozen members of the MS-13 gang.Escobar had told the group they were meeting to smoke marijuana, according to federal prosecutors.  She was also found guilty of obstructing the investigation into the murders by destroying evidence, warning people to flee, and lying to police. Alexander Ruiz, the only one who managed to escape by running for his life, told the jury that members of MS-13 covered their faces with sweatshirts and ordered them to get down on the ground, threatening to kill anyone who moved. Prosecutors said the motive for the attack was payback because the victims had disrespected the vicious gang on social media and allegedly were members of the rival 18th Street gang.

Ukrainian troops are preparing to fight Russian soldiers in the country’s eastern Donbas region as new satellite images show a 13-kilometre-long convoy approaching the territory.The photos taken on April 8, provided to Global News by American space technology company Maxar, show a large Russian military convoy consisting of hundreds of vehicles moving south through the Ukrainian town of Velykyi Burluk, which is just north of the Donbas.The convoy contained armoured vehicles, trucks with towed artillery and support equipment, Maxar said.The imagery adds to the growing reports Russia is preparing to begin a significant assault in the Donbas, a region that has seen ongoing fighting between Russian-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces since 2014.Moscow’s troop movements have been documented by western allies following the launch of the widespread war on Feb. 24.
