INTERLACHEN, Fla. - A postal carrier has died, one day after Florida deputies say five dogs mauled her when her truck broke down in a neighborhood.Putnam County Sheriff's deputies found the 61-year-old woman on the ground when they arrived at the scene in Interlachen Lake Estates on Sunday afternoon, sheriff's officials said in a Facebook post. They also found the dogs inside a fence at a nearby residence.A nearby resident told deputies they heard the woman screaming for help and saw five dogs attacking her.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia.According to authorities, the shooting occurred on the 2100 block of South Simpson Street just before 12:45 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA - As criminals continue to target catalytic converters in cities and suburbs across the country, mechanics who see the costly damage first-hand shared what models are most commonly picked on. Catalytic converters are part of a vehicle's exhaust system that helps filter out pollutants. They're found on the underside of the car and can be removed within minutes with a metal-cutting tool. Criminals target catalytic converters because they contain expensive precious metals like rhodium, platinum and palladium. Thieves can expect to get anywhere from $50 to $300 if they sell the converters to scrapyards, which then sell them to recycling facilities to reclaim the precious metals inside.Police in a Philadelphia suburb warned residents of catalytic converter thefts.

PHILADELPHIA - School officials in Philadelphia believe the district won't be impacted by a national shortage of teachers due to strong employment numbers. The School District of Philadelphia told FOX 29 it is 97% staffed for the upcoming school year and still actively recruiting hiring non-instructional roles. Data provided by the district showed a staffing percentage about 95% for positions including principal, vice principal and teacher. Counselors, according to the district, are at 94% hiring capacity and special education assists are at 76.8% MORE LOCAL HEADLINES"Despite shortages in teacher market, we are over 97% staffed for the school year and off to a strong start," a district spokesperson said. PHILADELPHIA - As students prepare to head back to the classrooms, parents and educators worry about school safety amid Philadelphia's worsening gun violence crisis. Mayor Jim Kenney joined school district leaders on Monday for an update on back-to-school safety and programs for the 2022-2023 academic year. Chief of School Safety Kevin Bethel said the district's plan will rely on a mix of school security officers, city police and parents to keep students safe. Philadelphia's public school system is one of the largest in the country, responsible for approximately 114,000 students. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe district reported 47 public and charter school students were killed, mostly from gun violence. Bethel said the district will support "safe corridors" to and from eight schools in the city's most troubled neighborhoods, including Bartram High School where a student was slain last winter.Part of the safety plan includes using police dogs to sniff-out guns hidden outside of school building. The district will not randomly check for weapons in middle and some elementary schools, but staff will be asked to stay alert. "Our parents, adults engaged with these young people are checking their bags making sure children are not taking their guns from their safes or guns they should not have and bringing them to schools," Bethel said. A 7-year-old boy became the victim of a shooting as police say he sat playing video games Saturday night.According to the latest data from the Philadelphia Police Department, there have been 350 homicides in the city this year.

PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia woman is fighting for her life after police say she was struck by a fallen tree branch while in her backyard on Monday. The 49-year-old woman was taken from her home on the 6600 block of Lincoln Drive to Albert Einstein Medical Center just after 11 a.m.Police did not disclose what injuries the woman sustained from being hit with the branch. It's unknown what caused the branch to fall.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - A dog was blinded after his owner says he ingested a dose of oxycodone while the two were out on a walk last week. Lori Burns was out with her pup, Chance the Rapper (the dog) on a walk along Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica last Sunday, when she says suddenly Chance was breathing heavily and eventually collapsed. Burns took Chance to the emergency vet where she was told he had ingested oxycodone and that he was now blind.She says the vet told her that incidents like this are more common than people may think, but they typically happen when a dog gets into a prescription cabinet, not just randomly on the sidewalk.

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - A horror movie convention promoter says it is assisting authorities following charges against actor Gary Busey involving alleged sexual offenses at an event in New Jersey earlier this month.Busey, 78, was charged Friday with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact and one count of harassment following alleged actions Aug. 12-14 at the Monster Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in the Philadelphia suburb of Cherry Hill, police said Saturday.Monster-Mania Convention said in a Facebook post that after attendees complained, an unspecified "celebrity guest was removed from the convention and instructed not to return.""Monster-Mania also encouraged the attendees to contact the police to file a report," the company said, adding that behavior that compromised the safety and well-being of attendees would not be tolerated.
