Import restrictions on energy drinks, MDF wood and CCTV lifted

COLOMBO (News 1st) – State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya says that import restrictions on 10 different products related to tourism, security, and sports were lifted.In a statement on Tuesday (20), the State Minister said these items include energy drinks, equipment required for CCTV systems, MGF wood required for the production of furniture, and sports equipment.The State Minister said that this was the third occassion that import restructions were lifted this year.On the 23rd of August 2022, the government restricted the import of 1,465 products.The State Minister said that since then to the 23rd of November, the government managed to save USD 1.211 Billion.On the 9th of September, the import restrictions on 708 items were lifted.On the 23rd of November, the import restrictions on 77 items were lifted.On the 19th of December, the import restrictions on 10 items were lifted. Govt owns 420 institutions including 29 Ministries, 99 Departments

COLOMBO (News 1st) – A document presented to the Sri Lankan parliament for the very first time has revealed that there are 1,283 institutions that come under the government.This includes 29 ministries and 99 departments.State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya produced a document listing all the government institutions to the Sri Lanka Parliament on Thursday (17).This is the first time in Sri Lankan history that such a document was disclosed to the house.According to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Policies, this document was presented as per a promise made by President Ranil Wickremesinghe during his recent budget speech.The government also operates 25 District Secretariats, 9 provincial councils, 341 Divisional Secretariats and 341 local government bodies.According to the document a total of 420 institutions are owned by the government.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Minister of State for Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya says in a statement that there is no other option but to raise taxes in a situation where 4 million of the 6.8 million families living in the country are demanding various subsidies. The relevant announcement further states that the people also have a responsibility to keep the poor people of the country alive. The announcement also emphasized that there is a huge deficit between the government's income and expenditure and to cover it, as inflation is close to 100 per cent, money cannot be printed anymore, so taxes should be levied as much as possible.

Import restrictions on vehicle spare parts, cosmetics to be lifted soon

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lanka's Finance Ministry said that the import restrictions on a number of products including cosmetics, and vehicle spare parts will be lifted within two weeks.State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya on Friday (21) said that the Department of Economic Research will work on lifting the restrictions after considering the appeals forwarded by those involved in the relevant sectors.On the 23rd of August 2022, Sri Lanka restricted the imports of 1,465 products due to the forex crisis.Thereafter, 708 products were removed from that list after considering multiple appeals.The State Minister said the restrictions will be gradually lifted in the future based on the reasonable requests made by importers.

Sri Lanka to waive penalties on delayed containers

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lanka has decided to waive demurrage fees of over 900 freight containers detained at the Colombo Port by Sri Lanka Customs for various reasons.During a recent meeting with Sri Lanka Customs State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya noted that over a million kilograms of rice is being held in 79 containers at the Colombo Port, and were not released due to demurrage not being settled.It was decided to release 950 freight containers that are being detained by Sri Lanka Customs, as it has created massive congestion at the Colombo Port. A cabinet paper with regard to waiving the penalties will be produced to the Cabinet soon, said minister Nimal Siripala during the same meeting.
