Kevin Stitt on Tuesday signed a bill that bans non-binary gender markers on birth certificates, enraging LGBT advocates. The Oklahoma State Department of Health agreed in a civil case last year to allow a nonbinary option for people who do not identify as either male or female.
The birth certificate in that case was issued to an Oklahoma-born Oregon resident who sued after the agency initially refused the request.
The settlement angered Republicans, including the governor. His appointee to lead the agency resigned the next day after the settlement, and the governor issued an executive order prohibiting any changes to a person's gender on birth certificates – despite the settlement agreement.
