The next Covid variant could be ‘more severe’ than Omicron, Scotland’s National Clinical Director has warned. Earlier this week, Nicola Sturgeon told MSPs there are signs of ‘encouragement’ in recent data as the new variant continues to spread across Scotland.

The First Minister said that new infection numbers have fallen in all age groups, apart from over 85s. She added that the situation in Scotland’s hospitals appears to be improving.

There have also been early studies that Omicron may be milder than previous variants, with one report suggesting that the risk of hospitalisation could be two-thirds lowers compared to Delta.Professor Jason Leitch warned that Omicron will not be the last variant Scotland will see and suggested that the next strain could potentially be worse.

Drug used to treat COVID-19 in short supply at Hamilton hospitals
COVID-19 due to low supply during the current wave of the pandemic.St Joseph’s Healthcare Dr. Zain Chagla says Tocilizumab — an anti-inflammatory medication — is one of few drugs physicians can give to people when they get moderately or critically ill with COVID-19 to protect them from getting ventilated or dying.Chagla says Hamilton’s hospitals have “been very strict” in recent times since supply shortages have led to limiting doses and turning to alternative medications.“We look at patients to see whether or not there is an expected survival just for the sake of making sure that we give the drug to people where we think it’s going to derive the most benefit,” Chagla told 900 CHML’s Good Morning Hamilton.“We’ve had to bring in alternative medications which have similar efficacy, which is good, but … are expensive and have more drug interactions associated.” Ontario science table recommends limiting use of COVID drug due to supply shortage Ontario’s COVID Science Advisory Table recommended rationing the drug as far back as April 2021 as supply shortages coincided with the third wave of infections that sent more patients into intensive care than the first two.The agency suggested use be restricted for critically- and moderately-ill patients and that a second doses  — usually considered after 24 hours — be scrapped.Dr.

California mother: Teachers manipulated child to change gender identity
LOS ANGELES - A mother who claims teachers secretly manipulated her 11-year-old daughter into changing her gender identity and name has filed a legal case against a tiny California school district.Spreckels Union School District was responsible for "extreme and outrageous conduct" that led the student on a path toward transitioning as a boy and drove a wedge between mother and child, according to the claim filed Wednesday by a conservative legal group.Jessica Konen said two middle school teachers who ran the school’s Equality Club — later known as UBU (You Be You) — had planted the seed in her daughter’s head in 6th grade that she was bisexual and then introduced the idea she was transgender. The legal claim that is a precursor to a lawsuit follows a flare up of tensions in the district last fall after the author of a book widely criticized as "anti-transgender" quoted the two teachers speaking at a conference about how to run an LGBTQ+ club in a conservative community.Spreckels is a speck of a town in the agricultural Salinas Valley, about 90 miles south of San Francisco. It was once home to the world’s largest sugar refinery and was the setting for some of the scenes in the 1955 film based on John Steinbeck’s "East of Eden."While Konen said her daughter had revealed she was bisexual, the mother was unaware she was identifying as a boy until she was called to a meeting at the Buena Vista Middle School principal’s office in December 2019 when her daughter was in 7th grade. She wasn’t told the purpose of the meeting until her daughter entered the room and sat across a table from her and teacher Lori Caldeira broke the news."I literally was caught off guard.
