A town in Greater Manchester has become England's coronavirus hotspot following a surge in infections. Oldham recorded 145 new cases of Covid-19 in the last seven days to August 9, official government figures show.

This means that there are 61 new cases per 100,000 people in the local area - the highest current rate in England, and above previous hotspots Leicester and Blackburn with Darwen.

The next worst-hit locations are Pendle and Blackburn, where the weekly rises were 58.6 and 43 cases per 100,000 people respectively.

It comes as two towns and once city were added to the coronavirus 'watch-list' on Friday, including Preston, Swindon and Bedford.
