Canada and the United States have agreed to implement the Safe Third Country Agreement across the entire shared land border, in an effort to deter irregular migrant crossings at unofficial entryways like Roxham Road.
The change will take effect at midnight Saturday, according to a joint statement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S.
President Joe Biden on Friday. “After midnight tonight, police and border officers will enforce the agreement and return irregular border crossers to the closest port of entry with the United States,” Trudeau later said at a press conference alongside Biden.
Canada has also agreed to welcome an additional 15,000 migrants from the Western Hemisphere over the next year as part of the agreement.
