Plague infected chipmunks in South Lake Tahoe prompt closures

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chipmunks have tested positive for plague in South Lake Tahoe, prompting closures to some areas so vector control experts can carry out an abatement program."Kiva Beach, the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, and their parking areas are closed until Friday for plague abatement," the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit alerted the public on Twitter on Monday, asking people to avoid the areas.Tallac Historic Site Trail near Kiva Beach. NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A dad is facing charges after allegedly telling arresting officers that he left his 6-month-old son unattended in a hot car while he went inside a casino to gamble.Officers with the North Las Vegas Police Department identified the suspect as Mitchell Anthony Hooks."Mitchell told me he shouldn’t have done what he did and that he deserved anything that was coming to him," Officer Osvaldo Cerda-Guzman wrote in the police report. Nevada woman broke into a dentist’s office, stole money and pulled 13 teeth from an unconscious patient on two separate occasions, according to Washoe County police.Deputies allege that Laurel Eich – who is not a dentist – broke into a dental office where she claimed she had formerly worked.Eich allegedly stole $22,861 in cash and checks during the May 3 break-in, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.Meanwhile, the tooth extraction occurred on a different date than the break-in, Eich told detectives.
