COLOMBO (News 1st); One in three households, 33% of Sri Lankans are food insecure according to WFP’s Household Food Security Survey (December 2022).It added that nearly seven in ten households are adopting foodbased coping strategies such as relying on less preferred food, limiting portion sizes and reducing the number of meals. In addition, over eight in ten households are turning to livelihood coping strategies such as borrowing money or spending savings.WFP’s Market Functionality Index for December showed that commodity prices continue to be volatile. Fraud in importing Aussie heifers to Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Reports have surfaced that an attempt is being made to cover up a serious fraudulent deal involving the importation of dairy heifers from Australia dating back to 2012 all the way up to 2018.Sri Lanka spend US $37.3 Mn to import 5,000 dairy heifers from Australia for dairy farms operated by the National Livestock Development Board from 2012 to 2015.A majority of the dairy heifers imported from Australia's Wellard without following proper procurement process died as they could not adapt to Sri Lanka's climate.The project failed, and thereafter in 2018 the Ministry of Rural Economic Development again decided to import dairy heifers, and this time the number was 20,000 animals.Sri Lanka obtained a US $237 Mn loan from Rabobank in the Netherlands, and used US $23.7 Mn to import 5,000 heifers.Most of these animals fell ill and died after they were given to farmers, and at the same time another US $11.9 Mn was paid in advance for another back of 5,000 heifers.The advance was paid when there were no monetary allocations, and the then-Ministry Secretary had made payments without approval from the parliament.The payment was made five days before she retired, and her spouse is a high ranking public servant at the moment.This serious matter was taken up in COPE on Wednesday (24).Mahindananda Aluthgamage, a Former Minister said "Heifers were imported from Wellard for this project for breeding at a cost of Rs. 4.46 Billion.

World celebrates Deepavali – The Festival of Lights

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Hindus across the World Celebrate the Deepavali Festival today (24).Diwali (also called Divali or Deepavali) is a “festival of lights” that celebrates the triumph of light over dark and good over evil, and the blessings of victory, freedom, and enlightenment. The name comes from Sanksrit dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” On the night of Diwali, celebrants light dozens of candles and clay lamps (called diyas), placing them throughout their homes and in the streets to light up the dark night. In most of India, Diwali consists of a five-day celebration that peaks on the third day with the main celebration of Diwali. In other places where Diwali occurs, usually only the main day is celebrated.Diwali is primarily celebrated by followers of the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain faiths.

Sri Lanka looks to its neighbours for help after Navy boat with six sailors remains missing for a month

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lanka Navy said it has sought the assistance of neighboring countries to locate the Sri Lanka Navy boat that went missing with six Sri Lankan sailors.Navy Spokesperson Captain Indika De Silva told News 1st that information about the missing boat was relayed to the authorities in India, Maldives, Indonesia, and Australia assuming that the Sri Lanka Navy boat may have drifted into international waters.The Sri Lanka Navy boat with six sailors had been engaged in operations to monitor suspicious activity in the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka and had left Sri Lanka on the 16th of September, and has been missing for exactly one month.On the 17th of September 2022, the Sri Lanka Navy lost all communication with the boat in question, and the Navy Spokesperson said that search and rescue operations are continuing to locate the missing sailors and the boat.
