New Delhi: India reported 263 new covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, a consistently declining trend, according to the Union Health Ministry on Monday.

The count of active cases has dwindled to 4,709. The country has reported over 44.9 million infections and 531,866 deaths in three years since the pandemic’s onset.

Hospital admissions are decreasing alongside falling case numbers, said health experts. Yet, they cautioned that elderly individuals and those with comorbidities remain susceptible to infection, urging them to take booster shots if not done already and adhere to covid-19 safety protocols.

The covid-19 variant, XBB.1.16, responsible for the recent cases, now encounters a populace developing hybrid immunity from vaccinations and natural infections.
