New Delhi: India recorded 206 new cases of covid-19 on Tuesday, a significant decrease from a peak of 13,000 cases in April, the Union health ministry reported.
The number of active cases has also dwindled to 4,503. Since the start of the pandemic three years ago, India has seen over 44.9 million cases and 531,867 deaths linked to the virus.
However, health experts have observed a decrease in hospital admissions as case numbers continue to drop. Those who are older or have pre-existing conditions, though, remain susceptible and are advised to receive a booster dose.
The recent surge was attributed to the covid variant XBB.1.16. Scientists believe that hybrid immunity, achieved through both vaccination and natural infection, is prevalent in the Indian population.
