The Queen makes surprise public appearance at Platinum Jubilee after health woes
Queen has officially made a public appearance at her Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The main event, which featured incredible music performances as well as parades from the King's Regiment, was shown live on ITV on Sunday (May 15) - and even featured the likes of American actor Tom Cruise. And the Queen arrived in her classic Range Rover, escorted by a parade of horses as she slowly made her way out of the backseat aided by a walking stick. The crowd went wild as her car arrived in the parade square.According to ITV's Chris Ship, the Queen proceeded to take a small elevator up to her seat from ground level, preventing her from being forced to climb steps. He posted on social media: "She used a small lift/elevator to navigate her way from her car in the area to her seat in the stand. As a 96 year old, it’s surprising and astonishing she hasn’t had to do this before."She later sat atop a velvet-lined throne with a blanket across her knees to watch the proceedings outdoors, as the mounted guards performed to music. She wore a grey cardigan encrusted with jewels around her shoulders, over a blue floral patterned top.It comes after her health woes left the monarch unable to appear at the opening of Parliament - an event she had only missed twice before, both times due to pregnancy.Prince Charles appeared in her place to provide the opening speech.Fans were loving seeing their monarch in public again, as they took to Twitter to air their thoughts. One penned: "Why am I smiling so sheepishly.

President MUST resign; NPP ready to lead Interim Government – Anura
COLOMBO (News 1st); Leader of the National People’s Power Anura Kumara Dissanayake has stressed the need for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign, and thereafter an interim government can be formed for a period of six months. He further said that the NPP is ready to take control of the Interim Government that will be formed, adding that the support of other parties is required, and if that does not happen the NPP would function in the opposition.Anura Kumara Dissanayake said authorities must arrest the Temple Trees conspirators who created the violence in the country, and produce them before the law.“It is clear that Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Ministers, MPs, Pradeshiya Sabha members, and others used state power to plan the violence,” he said calling on authorities to arrest them and produce them in court.Further, he called on the law enforcement agencies, including the IGP and the Police, to take action to maintain the law and the peace in the country.Dissanayake said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa must immediately step down as his ‘solutions’ to the issues have not led to any form of stability in the country. He also called on the Speaker to function as the Acting President, given that Sri Lanka does not have a Prime Minister. He said the Government and Parliament do not represent the public mandate, and since there is no public trust on the government, a new government must be formed.Dissanayake speaking to the media said the NPP is prepared to take control of the interim government, until an election is called for to establish a new government.

President must explain reasons for declaring emergency – BASL
COLOMBO (News 1st); The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) said it is gravely concerned of the declaration of a state of emergency by the President with effect from midnight on the 6th of May 2022.“As was stated earlier on the 2nd of April 2022, when the President declared a State of Emergency for a brief period of time, the BASL remains of the view that a declaration of a state of emergency is not the answer to the present situation in the country including the spate of public protests and strikes which have occurred.,” it added in a statement. The BASL re-iterated that the state of emergency must not be used to stifle peaceful protests and dissent or to make arbitrary arrests and detentions. The protests in turn must not be violent and must remain peaceful at all times.“We appeal to all parties in both government and the opposition to recognize the grave crisis that is facing the country and its people and the urgent need to resolve the political impasse in the country,” it said. The BASL calls upon the President to forthwith explain to the people the reasons as to why he has declared the State of Emergency.“We call upon the President to revoke the proclamation declaring a state of emergency and to ensure that the fundamental rights of the people such as the freedom of expression including the freedom of speech and publication and the freedom of peaceful assembly which are aspects of the sovereignty of the people are respected and protected and not violated by the State or its agents,” it noted. The BASL also calls upon the people of the country to remain calm and to act in a peaceful manner so that their fundamental rights which form part of their intangible heritage remain protected.
