Global iPhone shortage about to hit millions of users as China clamps down on Covid
lockdown in parts of China has forced factories to shut.Pegatron, one of the few companies to assemble iPhones, has closed two of its assembly plants in the cities of Shanghai and Kunshan to comply with the Chinese government's strict new coronavirus curbs.The company makes around 20% to 30% of all iPhones worldwide, leaving a significant gap in Apple's supply chain.
It says it hopes to "resume production soon".Quanta, a company that makes MacBooks, has also had to shut its doors, causing further mayhem for Apple.
Apple has been approached for comment and this article will be updated with any statements it provides.China's strict new coronavirus lockdown comes amid a spike in cases of the virus, particularly in the city of Shanghai, the country's most populous.In what has been called China's strictest lockdown yet, Shanghai has been placed in a 'two-part' lockdown which only lets half of the city out at a time to get essentials while the other half must stay home.
A video recently posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo showed a drone patrolling the skies around Shanghai flashing red and white lights.Using a loudspeaker, it barks at residents: "Please comply with Covid restrictions.
