Emergency powers only need 'very short' extension - Donnelly

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has told the Dáil that emergency pandemic measures, including additional powers for the gardaí, will only need to be extended "for a very short time".

Introducing the relevant legislation to the Dáil, the Minister said the measures will be extended from 10 June until 9 November.

He said the bill had been changed to ensure there could only be one further extension of the measures - and then for only three months.

Concluding, he said introducing such measures "do not sit easily with me... but I believe they have been required". He added that he had been in touch with NPHET earlier, and that the "trajectory is positive".
