Labour are demanding a probe into Covid-19 deaths in care homes, saying staff and residents had been tragically let down. The party’s deputy leader Angela Rayner called for “some investigation”, citing figures showing there are “10,000 unaccounted for deaths” in the sector.

It came as the Government admitted there were “big lessons” to be learned from the care home crisis and acknowledged the situation remained a “challenge”.

Meanwhile it emerged Health Secretary Matt Hancock failed to hold a single face-to-face meeting with care home bosses in the weeks leading up to the lockdown.

The revelation came despite him last week saying the Government had “tried to throw a protective ring around our care homes” from the start.
