Respiratory diseases were reported in 98% of Covid-related deaths, according to new statistics from the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO data shows that four in every five people who have died from the virus had at least three medical conditions mentioned in their records.

Covid-19 was identified as the underlying cause of death (UCOD) in a total of 5,384 deaths between March 2020 and February 2022.

Pneumonia was certified as a condition in 3,023 - or 56% - of Covid-19 deaths, while chronic lower respiratory diseases were stated on 948 - or 18% - death certificates.

HOLLISTER, Calif. - A San Jose fire captain is grappling with an unthinkable tragedy after all three of his children were killed in a car crash Sunday evening.Captain Steve Biakanja of San Jose Fire Station 16 lost his 14-year-old twin daughters Leigh and Lucy, and 12-year-old son Ben, in a crash on Highway 156 in Hollister.The children's mother also died in the crash.Captain Steve Biakanja pictured alongside his children, Leigh, Lucy, and Ben.  According to the California Highway Patrol, the four were traveling in a Tesla on eastbound Highway 156 when, for unknown reasons, their vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and hit a tractor-trailor.Investigators are trying to determine why the Tesla crossed into oncoming traffic.The Carmel Unified School District said that Leigh, Lucy, and Ben were all enrolled at Carmel Middle School and attended Tularcitos Elementary School before that.Superintendent Ted Knight told KION-TV, "Coming back, the second week of school to this news this morning was certainly very tragic and was hard for a lot of staff and students to hear."Knight said the deaths of Leigh, Lucy, and Ben has taken a toll on some of their classmates."Some students did need to go home. Some students are in our wellness center talking to mental health professionals.

(Photo by GEORGE FREY/AFP via Getty Images) SALT LAKE CITY - A Utah high school athletics association secretly investigated a female athlete — without telling her or her parents — after receiving complaints from the parents of two girls she had defeated in competition questioning whether the girl was transgender.The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Utah High School Activities Association and the girl’s high school determined she indeed was female after poring through school records dating back to kindergarten.Association spokesman David Spatafore told lawmakers that the girl and her family weren’t told of the investigation to spare them embarrassment and "to keep the matter private," the Tribune reported Thursday.The revelation comes as at least 12 Republican-led states — including Utah — have passed laws banning transgender women or girls in sports.
