28 people hospitalised during Jathika Jana Balawegaya protest in Colombo
Colombo (News1st) – 28 people have been hospitalised following the protest march organised by the Jathika Jana Balavegaya in Colombo on Sunday (26).Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protest march which commenced at the Vihara Maha Devi Park in Colombo.The injured have been admitted to the National Hospital for treatment.The protest was held citing several concerns including delays in conducting the Local Government Election.Earlier in the day, the Fort Magistrate Court issued an order preventing a group of 26 including Leader of the Jathika Jana Balavegaya Anura Kumara Dissanayaka from entering areas around the President's Office, President House and Galle Face from 01 pm – 08 pm on Sunday (26).This was in reponse to a request made by the Fort, Kompannavidiya and Colpetty Police.The Police had made the request taking into consideration the inconvenience to the public owing to the JJB protest to be held in Colombo on Sunday (26) afternoon.Similarly, the Maligakanda Magistrate Court issued an order preventing a group including Leader of the Jathika Jana Balavegaya Anura Kumara Dissanayaka from protesting or marching around the Colombo Hospital Square.This was in response to a request made by the Maradana Police OIC.The Maradana Police had made the request considering the possible inconvenience to patients and people visiting the hospitals including the National Hospital and Eye Hospital.According to the court order, the protesters were prevented from marching from the Lipton Roundabout to Deans Road, as well as blocking the road and pavement leading upto the Seamans Road Junction.The court order applies to 26 including JJB Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, Tilvin Silva, Vijitha Herath, Nalinda

 COLOMBO (News 1st); A group of locals from Kalutara North protested against the hike in electricity tariffs by carrying torches on Monday (20) night.The protestors highlighted the fact that the 66% tariff hike has severely affected the livelihoods of the low-income earners, and it is making matters worse.They demanded the government immediately reduce the tariff or provide concessions to the people who are already suffering from the economic crisis.On the 15th of February 2023, the Public Utilities Commission approved a 66% hike in electricity tariffs.In order to generate an additional income of 287 billion rupees for the Ceylon Electricity Board, the proposal to increase the electricity tariff by 66 percent which was approved by the cabinet was forwarded to the Public Utilities Commission on January 2nd.The proposal was not approved by the Public Utilities Commission, and several members of the commission resigned due to conflict of opinion on the proposal.Three new members were appointed for the vacant positions on two occasions, and yesterday the proposal was taken up again under the chairmanship of Janaka Ratnayake.A 36% increase in electricity tariff was proposed to generate an income of 142 billion rupees based on the suggestions of public consultation and all other parties, but only Chairman Janatha Ratnayake agreed to the proposal.The other members of the commission namely Attorney Chaturika Wijesinghe, Douglas Nanayakkara and SG Senaratne had rejected the proposal.According to the new electricity bill hike proposalThe electricity tariff of Rs 360 paid for 30 electricity units so far can be increased to Rs 1300.That's an increase of 261 percent.This gives an opportunity to increase the electricity tariff of Rs.

KENSINGTON - Philadelphia police are looking for a suspect they say abducted a young woman, at gunpoint, and fled with her in a golf cart.Officials say the incident happened Saturday morning, just after 6:30, on the 2500 block of Aramingo Avenue, in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood.According to authorities, the victim was walking east on Cumberland Street toward Aramingo Avenue, while the suspect appeared to be following her, in a maroon and black Polaris Northstar XP 1000 two-seat golf cart.He pulled into a bank parking lot on the 2500 block of Aramingo and fired a weapon one time, the bullet hitting the asphalt of the lot.At that point, officials say, a witness told police the man crossed over Aramingo into the Wawa and Applebee’s parking lot, got out of the golf cart, pulled out a gun, pointed the gun at the woman, grabbed her and shoved her into the golf cart.Then he drove off in the golf cart, with the woman, heading west on Cumberland.The victim is a woman in her late 20s or early 30s, wearing a light-colored jacket, a dark shirt, black jeans with a white design on the left leg. Police are looking to identify two additional suspects they say were seen standing on a car that was vandalized by an unruly crowd near Temple's campus on Sunday.  PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police are searching for more vandalism suspects after a large, rowdy crowd damaged multiple vehicles near Temple University on Super Bowl Sunday. Earlier this week, police released images of nine people who they wanted to speak to after a car was overturned on the 1700 block of Arlington Street Sunday afternoon. Friday morning, police released video of two additional suspects they say vandalized another car on the same block. The Philadelphia Police Department shared images of nine people who they believe helped overturn someone's vehicle on the 1700 block of Arlington Street Sunday afternoon.Police say the individuals depicted in the new video released Friday were seen standing on the hood of the second car that was parked on the 1700 block of Arlington Street. In the mayhem, that vehicle sustained damage to the body, paint, windshield, and mirrors that totaled about $5,700. Police say the two suspects shown in Friday’s video are just two of several people they are working to identify in that incident at this time. RELATED HEADLINES: FOX 29 has spoken with the owners of two cars that were damaged in the mayhem, including the silver Volvo that was flipped over onto its roof. "I looked out the window, I just saw my car upside down. COLOMBO (News 1st); Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya ordered the Colombo Chief Judicial Medical Officers, and the Government Analyst to preserve the bio-samples of the late Dinesh Schaffter, who died under mysterious circumstances.President's Counsel Anuja Premaratne appearing for the aggrieved party informed the court that the samples would be necessary if another post-mortem is to be carried out over the death of the Colombo-based businessman.Based on this submission, the Colombo Additional Magistrate ordered the Chief Judicial Medical Officer of the Colombo General Hospital, and the Director of the Colombo National Hospital to provide a comprehensive report to the court detailing all medical treatment provided to Dinesh Schaffter after he was admitted to the hospital on the 15th of December 2022.In addition, the Colombo Additional Magistrate ordered the Colombo Chief Judicial Medical Officer and the Officer in Charge of the Crimes Laboratory to provide all photographs and videos obtained before and after the postmortem examination, as well as those taken when performing the post-mortem.Dinesh Schaffter was found dead inside his car at the Borella Public Cemetery on the 15th of December 2022.The Criminal Investigations Department informed the court that in addition to Dinesh Schaffter's biosamples, other samples were found on the zip-ties used to his hands, the wire used to strangle him, and the bottle discovered inside his.
