Consultation is under way with the Department of Foreign Affairs on proposals to add a number of countries to mandatory hotel quarantine list, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has said.
Attorney General Paul Gallagher has written to Mr Donnelly about the proposal, which would see the list expanded to include EU countries including France, Germany and Italy.
RTÉ News understands that the letter says any such plans would have to be legally robust as the arrangements could be challenged in the courts.
Mr Donnelly told RTÉ News that he has spoken to Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney on the issue and wrote to him earlier in the week outlining the proposals made to him by Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn.
