The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen will deliver her first State of the Union speech in Brussels this morning.
Commission presidents normally use the speech to set out their priorities for the year ahead, but Ms von der Leyen's first 10 months have been beset by unprecedented challenges, not least the Covid-19 pandemic.
She is expected to set out her vision of tougher action on climate change and the digital economy, but she will spell out how the Covid health emergency has changed European society perhaps for the long term.
Ms von der Leyen took over as Commission president just weeks after the EU and UK successfully concluded the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.
