(Reuters) – Sri Lanka must tighten monetary policy, raise tax and adopt flexible exchange rates to address its debt crisis, a senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) official said on Tuesday.The country of 22 million people has requested loans from the IMF as it struggles to pay for imports amid crushing debt and a sharp drop in foreign exchange reserves that has fueled soaring inflation.“We’ve had very good, fruitful, technical discussions on preparations for the negotiations with authorities over the past weekend and couple of days before,” said Anne-Marie Gulde-Wolf, acting director of the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department, speaking at an online news conference.Sri Lankan Finance Minister Ali Sabry was in Washington last week to talk to the IMF, the World Bank, India and others about financing help for his country, which has suspended payments on portions of its $51 billion in external debt.“The requirement for fund lending will be progress toward debt sustainability,” Gulde-Wolf said, calling on Sri Lanka for measures to increase tax revenues to address critical spending needs.“Monetary policy has to be tightened to keep inflation in check,” she said. “We see a need for flexible exchange rates.”Gulde-Wolf did not reply to a question on the total value for any IMF package, nor the estimated timing of a conclusion to the negotiations with Sri Lanka.

LOWER MERION, Pa. - A volunteer Lower Merion firefighter is back doing what he loves after recovering from an accident on I-76 last summer.Sam Shaffer, 18, is back with the Lower Merion High School's men’s lacrosse team as he makes his debut back on the field this week after recovering from severe injuries caused by an accident that seriously injured one of his colleagues and killed another. Back on July 24, around 3 a.m., emergency crews responded to a crash involving two vehicles in the westbound lanes of I-76 in Lower Merion Township.At 3:23 a.m., authorities say Jacquelyn Walker, 63, was operating a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the right lane as she approached the scene of the crash. They say she then crossed over the rumble strips on the side of the highway and plowed into the crash scene, injuring Shaffer and his friend, Alex Fischer and killing firefighter, Tom Royds. RELATED:Shaffer was flown from the scene of the accident to Penn Presbyterian where he spent about a week with a brain bleed, fractured eye socket, broken leg, and a torn ACL and MCL. Now, Shaffer is back in both uniforms, and he says he owes it all to his family and his never-give-up attitude. "It feels great finally getting back out with the family, the team, firefighting again, it feels great," he said.

DALLAS - A Texas appeals court on Monday delayed the execution of Melissa Lucio amid growing doubts about whether she fatally beat her 2-year-old daughter in a case that has garnered the support of lawmakers, celebrities and even some jurors who sentenced her to death.The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted a request by Lucio's lawyers for a stay of execution so a lower court can review her claims that new evidence would exonerate her. It was not immediately known when the lower court would begin reviewing her case. Lucio had been set for lethal injection Wednesday for the 2007 death of her daughter Mariah in Harlingen, Texas.The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals stepped in just two days before Lucio was scheduled to die by lethal injection. In its decision, the state court ordered the Cameron County trial court to consider new evidence presented by Lucio’s legal team.

PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia father was killed in a rowhome fire when neighbors say he went back into the inferno to search for his three children who also perished. The School District of Philadelphia on Monday identified the young victims of the fire as Yamalier, 5, Yadriel, 9, and 12-year-old Alexangel. Authorities say the children, along with their father Alexis, died in a fire that erupted in a rowhome on the 3200 block of Hartville Street around 2 a.m.

EMMAUS, Pa. - A Lehigh Valley Borough is suing nearly 2 dozen companies that make foam used to put out fires because officials in the borough say that the toxic chemicals found in the foam were also found in its water supply. The Borough of Emmaus is alleging that two of the borough's wells became contaminated from a nearby fire-fighting facility. They're saying that the foam, which was used at the facility for more than 50 years, seeped into the ground and contaminated the water wells. Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) say that when they tested the water wells of Emmaus last year, they found well over the 70 parts per trillion of cancer-causing chemicals that the EPA deems safe. In one of the wells, which is 150 feet away from the fire facility, the EPA say they found 456 parts per trillion of the chemicals.
