COLOMBO (News 1st) – The body of a 24 year old man was recovered from under the debris on Saturday (15), trapped after a mound of earth collapsed onto a house in  Mainnoluwa, Warakapola.The body of his 48 year old mother was also recovered on Saturday (15) morning.The Police Special Task Force and Sri Lanka Army on Friday (14) launched a search operation to locate three people who were trapped under the mound of earth.Security forces and local residents managed to locate the father and admit him to the hospital.The Disaster Management Centre of the Kegalle District said the mound had collapsed onto the house following heavy showers on Friday afternoon.

NEW YORK (FOX NEWS) - Dane Partridge, an Idaho father and U.S. Army veteran, died this week while "fighting for freedom in Ukraine," his family announced. His father, Dennis Partridge, wrote on Facebook on Saturday that his son was in a coma after being critically injured by a Russian tank blast. Partridge was being treated at Kyiv military hospital and was taken off life support on Tuesday, his family announced. TWO AMERICANS DEAD IN UKRAINE, OFFICIALS SAY"He was a fine soldier who fought with valor and bravery on the battlefield," his family wrote on Facebook.

PHILADELPHIA - An 18-year-old has been arrested in connection with chaos that erupted on the streets of Old City earlier this month. On October 2, chaos unfolded near the FOX 29 studio at the intersection of Market and 4th Streets. Around 10 p.m. crowds began to gather, blocking traffic in all directions as hundreds of people formed a large circle to watch drag racing, car tricks and fireworks that were set off. The Philadelphia Police Department says officers assigned to a detail responded to Broad and York Streets around 12:30 a.m.

PHILADELPHIA -  Philadelphia police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying and locating two suspects wanted in connection with a deadly shooting earlier this month. The incident happened back on Oct. 1, on the 900 block of Marcella Street.Police say the victim, a 42-year-old man, was sitting on his front porch when two male suspects approached him just before midnight.Both men opened fire from the sidewalk, and continued firing as they made their way up the porch stairs, according to police. MORE HEADLINES: Investigators told FOX 29 following the shooting that the suspects continued to fire as the victim laid on the ground.

PHILADELPHIA - Four people are recovering after they were shot in Kensington early Friday morning, according to authorities. Officials say officers responded to the 800 block of East Willard Street for a report of a person with a gun. Responding officers found four gunshot victims, according to police. Authorities say a 30-year-old man was shot in the ankle, a 43-year-old man was shot in the left foot, an 18-year-old female suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and a graze wound to the back, and a 29-year-old man was shot in the hand and ankle. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESAll four victims were transported to Temple University Hospital, where they are in stable condition, according to police. Officials say there have been no arrests and that the investigation is ongoing with the department's Shooting Investigation Group.

LOGAN - Philadelphia police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man by three men in Philadelphia's Logan neighborhood.Officials say the shooting happened Thursday afternoon, around 1:15, on the 4700 block of North Marvine Street.Responding officers found the 34-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. PHILADELPHIA - Homicide detectives with the Philadelphia Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting. Police say the shooting occurred on the 200 block of East Sharpnack Street at 12:39 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESAccording to officials, a 53-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and he was pronounced dead on scene at 12:48 p.m. Police say no weapons were recovered and no arrests were made. This is a developing story.

PHILADELPHIA - Investigators with the Philadelphia Police Department have released surveillance video and asked for the public's help to identify two suspects wanted in connection with a shooting in Germantown. Police say the shooting occurred at the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Logan Street on Wednesday around 1:48 a.m. According to authorities, two men dressed in all black got out of a silver sedan believed to be a Nissan maxima before opening fire on a man as he climbed into his vehicle. Police say the suspects then got back into the car and fled south on Wayne Avenue towards Abbottsford Avenue. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe victim was shot two times in the back and was transported to Einstein Hospital by officers. Police have not released any additional information about the victim's status. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Philadelphia police at 215-686-8477 or submit an anonymous tip online.

PHILADELPHIA - A third person has been arrested and charged in connection with chaos that erupted at an unsanctioned car rally in Wildwood. Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Wildwood Police Department Chief Robert Regalbuto announced the arrest of 18-year-old Zion Diaz of Hammonton, New Jersey, on Wednesday. Officials say on Wednesday morning, detectives executed a search warrant at Diaz' residence and arrested him without incident. According to the Prosecutor's Office, he was charged with 4th-degree riot and released on a summons. Sutherland says Diaz was identified as a person who instructed others at the unsanctioned rally to block intersections, do burnouts and block police cars from responding to emergency calls when chaos erupted in the streets of Wildwood on September 24. After the chaos, there were several reports of car crashes, injuries and damaged storefronts. One crash turned deadly, claiming the lives of 18-year-old Linday Weakland and 34-year-old Timothy Ogden, according to officials. Chaos erupted in Wildwood Crest Saturday night as an unsanctioned car rally took over the streets and, ultimately, killed two people.Police say Gerald J.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities have arrested and charged a man in connection with the shooting that killed one teen and injured four others outside Roxborough High School late last month.Yaaseen Bivins, 21, has been charged with murder, aggravated assaulted, and related offenses in the shooting that left 14-year-old Nicolas Elizalde dead. Bivins arrest comes a more than a week after officials issued an arrest warrant for 16-year-old Dayron Burney-Thorn in connection with the Roxborough High School incident. Burney-Thorn also faces murder and related charges. The mother of the 14-year-old boy killed in the shooting outside Roxborough High School recalled the moment she felt her son pass away in her arms.

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. - A Missouri woman was held captive in a basement room for about a month and was raped repeatedly before she was able to escape, according to charging documents filed Tuesday.The suspect, 39-year-old Timothy M. Haslett of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, was arrested Friday and appeared in court by video Tuesday from the Clay County jail.Judge Louis Angles entered a not guilty plea on Haslett's behalf on charges of first-degree rape or attempted rape, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree assault.

PHILADELPHIA - A judge threw out murder charges Tuesday against a former Philadelphia police officer accused of fatally shooting a Black man in the back as he ran. Ryan Pownall, 40, was facing third-degree murder charges in the 2017 shootingof 30-year-old David Jones. Police say a man is dead after he was shot inside a property in Stenton on Tuesday night.  PHILADELPHIA - Police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead in Stenton on Tuesday night. Just after 8 p.m., police say they responded to the 1400 block of East Sharpnack Street for reports of a shooting inside a property.Upon arrival, police say they found a 58-year-old man who had been shot one time in the back. Medics transported the victim to Albert Einstein Medical Center where authorities say he was pronounced dead at 8:35 p.m. Weapons were recovered in this incident and one male is in custody, according to police.

Jeremiah Thomas and Milan Dean-Brewer PHILADELPHIA - A carjacking turned into a terrifying ordeal for a 12-year-old girl this weekend, and now two men are being held responsible, according to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.Jeremiah Thomas and Milan Dean-Brewer are both accused of kidnapping the girl during a carjacking at a gas station on Ridge Avenue on October 9.The 12-year-old was still in the back seat when the suspects reportedly jumped in the running car and took off driving.Police say the girl's father had left her in the car to buy something inside the gas station.MORE HEADLINES:She was able to escape the car during a stop, and made it home safely with no injuries, according to the DA's office.The suspects were apprehended after they crashed the stolen car into a police vehicle in Montgomery County.They have both been charged with carjacking, kidnappings, auto theft and related offenses.

PHILADELPHIA - A local animal shelter has a message for a man they say stole a dog straight from its crate on Monday."If you’re reading this, and it was you who stole the dog, we want to make sure he is safe," ACCT Philly said in a Facebook post.They made the post after a dog named Withers went missing from its crate around 5 p.m. Staff says a man came into the shelter on Hunting Park Avenue and took the dog."Our staff were not able to stop him," the shelter said.MORE HEADLINES:Surveillance footage shows the suspected thief walking into the shelter in a black hoodie and sweatpants. The shelter says Withers' adopter is "heartbroken," and they are asking for the public's help to locate the dog."If he was your dog, and you were wanting to reclaim him, that’s great as we want to reunite as many pets with their people as possible," the shelter said.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Cascading global crises have left 54 countries including Sri Lanka – home to more than half of the world's poorest people — in dire need of debt relief, the UN said Tuesday (11).In a new report, the United Nations Development Programme warned that dozens of developing nations were facing a rapidly deepening debt crisis and that "the risks of inaction are dire".UNDP said without immediate relief, at least 54 countries would see rising poverty levels, and "desperately needed investments in climate adaptation and mitigation will not happen".That was worrisome since the affected countries were "among the most climate-vulnerable in the world".The agency's report, published ahead of meetings of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and also of G20 finance ministers in Washington, highlighted the need for swift action.But despite repeated warnings, "little has happened so far, and the risks have been growing," UNDP chief Achim Steiner told reporters in Geneva."That crisis is intensifying and threatening to spill over into an entrenched development crisis across dozens of countries across the world."The poor, indebted countries are facing converging economic pressures and many find it impossible to pay back their debt or access new financing.'Volatility'"Market conditions are shifting rapidly as a synchronised fiscal and monetary contraction and low growth are fuelling volatility around the globe," UNDP said.The UN agency said debt troubles had been brewing in many of the affected countries long before the Covid-19 pandemic hit."The rapid build-up in debt over the past decade has been consistently underestimated," it said.The freeze on debt repayment during the Covid crisis to lighten their burden
