AMS urges President & PM to step down
COLOMBO (News 1st); The Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) says that President Gotabaya Rajapaksha and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should step down immediately paving way to a credible, all party, interim Government to take over for a specified period, and if the authorities do not heed, the AMS has threatened to launch nationwide trade union action and mass scale peaceful protests. In a communique, the AMS notes that Sri Lanka had experienced the worst ever recorded economic downturn in the country, however the worst is yet to come.As a result of this, AMS points out that medical specialists are experiencing multiple challenges during the process of delivering optimum health care to our citizens, as all medical staff go that extra mile to serve our people under trying circumstances, they too have experienced the strategy of the rulers not only to ” patch up “but also to “divide and rule “to divert the focus of attention, capitalising on fuel shortage. The AMS strongly believe that distribution of fuel or any other essential commodity, when in short supply, should be done in a rational manner based on the ultimate benefit to the citizen of this country and should not lead to any division within the society.“We are of the opinion that it is the responsibility of all citizens of the country to direct the government to find a workable solution for the present crisis before it becomes unsalvageable,” the statement mentions. Therefore, the AMS reiterates their current stand endorsed by the membership at the recently held annual general meeting that the President Gotabaya Rajapaksha and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should step down immediately paving way to a credible, all party, interim government to take

'We live in America': Kenney reacts to shooting of officers, says he's looking forward to not being mayor
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney reacted to the news of two police officers being shot at Fourth of July festivities and says he's looking forward to the time he will no longer lead the city. On Monday, a large police presence responded to the 2500 block of Spring Garden Street where a massive crowd gathered to watch Jason Derulo performing at the Wawa Welcome America concert and firework show, authorities say. According to officials, a Philadelphia police officer assigned to highway patrol was grazed in the head and another officer, who was a member of the Montgomery County bomb squad, was shot in the shoulder. Both officers were taken to Jefferson University Hospital, where they were treated before being released, says Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw. The gunfire caused the massive crowd of spectators to scatter in the middle of the fireworks show, causing chaos and confusion as people began running. Two police officers suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds when gunfire erupted at a large 4th of July fireworks display in Philadelphia.Kenney and Outlaw spoke to reporters outside of Jefferson Hospital about the incident and gun violence in Philadelphia. Kenney said the day was going smooth at first and described the event as "laid back" and "chill" before shooting began. "[The] weather was beautiful. [The] concert was beautiful, but we live in America and we have the Second Amendment, and we have the Supreme Court of the United States telling everybody they can carry a gun whenever they want," he said.

Police: Off-duty corrections officer carjacked at gunpoint, shoots at alleged carjacker in North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating after an off-duty corrections officer was carjacked at gunpoint and shot at the alleged carjacker in North Philadelphia on Monday night. According to Chief Inspector Scott Small, officers with the 25th District received a 911 call for a robbery and gunshots on the 200 block of E Roosevelt Boulevard around 11 p.m. When officers arrived on location, they were met by an off-duty corrections officer, 59, who said he was leaving a friend's house and getting into his Toyota Avalon when he was approached by a man with a gun who pulled him out of the car, police say. According to authorities, the alleged carjacker got into the driver's seat of the car and began to drive away as the off-duty corrections officer fired five shots at the suspect and the car. The suspect sped off in the car and officers located it about 25 minutes later on the 4900 block of Bingham Street, officials say. Small says the vehicle was found with five bullet holes in it and fresh blood inside the car. Authorities say officers were also notified that a 21-year-old shooting victim with a gunshot wound in each arm showed up for treatment at Temple Hospital. Small says there is a possibility that the shooting victim may be the alleged carjacker and authorities are investigating. According to police, the off-duty officer said the suspect was wearing a surgical mask and a hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head.
