Pennsylvania boy, 8, finds huge shark tooth fossil while on vacation in South Carolina
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - Riley Gracely and his family were looking around the piles of dirt and gravel at Palmetto Fossil Excursions in Summerville when he saw something that looked like a tooth. The 8-year-old Lebanon, Pennsylvania, boy started digging in the soil, clay and gravel and pulled out a huge fossilized tooth from the long-extinct angustiden shark species, that was 22 million to 28 million years old."He got lucky," Riley’s dad Justin Gracely said in a phone call Monday.Sky Basak, who owns Palmetto Fossil with her husband Josh, called it a "once in a lifetime find."The tooth measured 4.75 inches — about the size of Riley’s hand. The Gracely family was on their annual vacation to Myrtle Beach and made the 2.5-hour trip south to Summerville to go to Palmetto Fossil, a 100-acre pit rich with prehistoric material including all manner — and parts — of sea creatures.South Carolina has many such locations, buried deep in the earth along the coastal plain, where ocean and rivers ebbed and flowed for millions of years.Gracely, 40, said he has been visiting Myrtle Beach since he was 5 and he and his mother, a microbiologist, scoured the sand for shark’s teeth. Two years ago, when Palmetto had just opened, Gracely saw something on Instagram about it and made the trek. This summer was their third visit.Last year, older son Collin, 10, found a 4-inch megalodon tooth, a species that came after the angustiden and the largest fish that ever lived, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

Redacted affidavit in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago search released by Justice Department
WASHINGTON - Fourteen of the 15 boxes recovered from former President Donald Trump's Florida estate early this year contained documents with classification markings, including at the top secret level, according to an FBI affidavit released Friday explaining the justification for this month's search of the property. The 32-page affidavit, even in its heavily redacted form, offers the most detailed description to date of the government records being stored at Trump's Mar-a-Lago property long after he left the White House and reveals the gravity of the government's concerns that the documents were there illegally.Mobile app users, click here to view the redacted affidavit"The government is conducting a criminal investigation concerning the improper removal and storage of classified information in unauthorized spaces, as well as the unlawful concealment or removal of government records," an FBI agent wrote on the first page of the affidavit in seeking a judge's permission for a warrant to search the property. The affidavit does not provide new details about the 11 sets of classified records recovered during the Aug. 8 search at Mar-a-Lago but instead concerns a separate batch of 15 boxes that the National Archives and Records Administration retrieved from the home in January. In those boxes, according to the affidavit, officials located 184 documents bearing classification markings, including 25 documents marked as top secret.

Desert flooding damages Interstate 10 between Los Angeles and Phoenix
DESERT CENTER, Calif. - The main highway from Los Angeles to Phoenix was damaged by a flash flood that washed out part of the road through the Southern California desert in the latest bout of punishing monsoonal thunderstorms that have hit the region this month. The latest round of flooding started Wednesday evening, damaging the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near the small community of Desert Center, about 165 miles (265 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.Traffic in both directions was halted initially, but westbound lanes for motorists heading from Arizona to California reopened later."We have a project happening in that area on the I-10, so it’s the I-10 tune up, so the kind of silver lining to this is that we had detour lanes, and those were actually the ones that we lost to the flood and the water, so the good thing is that they were able to use the main line right now for that one lane eastbound that is allowing traffic from LA to Arizona," said said Eric Dionne with Caltrans. All eastbound traffic was diverted until the California Department of Transportation managed to reopen one lane Thursday morning.Officials recommended that people heading from Southern California use Interstates 8 or 40, which are major detours."Everyone, just take [your] time," said trucker Lorne Focht. "Don't cut people off, and be patient.
