The UK government has said it will mount a legal challenge over the release of documents to a public inquiry looking at its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Cabinet Office announced that it was seeking a judicial review of the order by retired judge Heather Hallett - the inquiry chair - to hand over all correspondence.
In particular, the government is opposed to the release of unredacted WhatsApp messages, diaries and personal notebooks from Boris Johnson, who was prime minister at the time.
Mr Johnson came in for criticism early in the pandemic for failing to take the threat seriously enough, then as the death toll rose and new variants emerged.
