The UK is likely to be "one of the worst, if not the worst" hit countries in Europe by coronavirus, one of the nation's leading experts said today.
Wellcome Trust director Sir Jeremy Farrar, who advises the government and whose organisation is helping seek a Covid-19 vaccine, said better testing had let countries like Germany get ahead.
He accepted it was "inevitable" the UK would "learn lessons" from Germany after Tory ministers' slow progress on ramping up testing came under fire.
He added: "The UK is likely to be one of the worst, if not the worst, affected country in Europe." It comes after the number of daily deaths in the UK passed the peaks in Spain and Italy for the first time on Friday.
