A further 1,018 coronvirus patients have died in UK hospitals. There have been 884 new fatalities in English hospitals, 64 in Scotland, 54 in Wales and 16 in Northern Ireland.
The latest deaths are far higher than the 819 fatalities recorded last Thursday. The new figures show that the south-east was hardest-hit, with 209 deaths.
London came second with 185 fatalities, followed by 175 in the Midlands, 117 in the east of England, 80 in the north-east and Yorkshire.
The north-west recorded 80 deaths, while the south-west announced 38. The UK recorded its biggest daily rise in Covid deaths in hospitals, care homes and other settings yesterday, with 1,546 fatalities announced.
