UK coronavirus hospital death toll rises by 23 after record increase in new cases

The number of patients to die in UK hospitals after contracting Covid-19 has risen by 23. Health authorities this afternoon confirmed that 20 people had died in England and three in Wales.

There were no fatalities in Scotland, while Northern Ireland has yet to release its daily figure. Those who died in England were aged between 43 and 96, the NHS said in a statement.

Later today the Department of Health will release the number of confirmed deaths in all settings. Earlier this week the government's chief scientific advisor, Sir Patrick Vallance, warned that the daily death toll could be in the 200s by November if measures aren't taken to stop the virus spreading.
