A further 915 lives have been lost to Covid-19, bringing the UK's official death toll past 110,000. The tragic figures, released by the Department of Health, reveal that 20,634 new infections were detected in 24 hours.
Earlier today NHS England confirmed that the youngest victim to die in hospital was just seven years old. It means 110,250 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus, with 7,124 deaths in the past seven days.
A week ago there were 1,239 fatalities confirmed in all settings, while a month ago, on January 4, there were 407. Yesterday England's chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, warned that the daily number of deaths would remain high "for some time".
