The number of UK coronavirus cases has shot up by 6,874 in the highest ever daily increase. The UK's death toll rose by 34 - continuing a pattern of slowly rising - as the country registered record infection figures for the second day running.
It comes as the government's SAGE advisers estimated the R rate to now be as high as 1.5 - and after Boris Johnson introduced nationwide restrictions to curb infections.
Yesterday the overall number of deaths in all settings was recorded as 40 - with cases surging by 6,634. While the official case figures now are higher than ever before it is thought that they were vastly higher still back in March and April but were largely undetected because of a lack of tests outside hospitals.
