Conservative MP Greg Mclean, during a finance committee meeting on the trucker protests on Tuesday, argued that the freezing of an individual’s bank account is fundamentally against their rights according to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Samantha Dickson, the Assistant Deputy Minister at the Department of Justice replied saying that “the (Emergencies Act) measures have been tailored to limit the impact on the Charter of Rights no more than reasonably necessary to end the unlawful assembly and the obligation to freeze accounts that are participating in the illegal activities.”.
