Asbestos forced Simon Gratz High School and Prep Middle School to close on Wednesday. PHILADELPHIA - Simon Gratz High School in Strawberry Mansion will reopen to students on Thursday, after it abruptly closed due to asbestos. In a letter to families, Mastery Charter Schools CEO Scott Gordon said "all findings that needed to be remediated in order for the school to reopen are now complete" and added that air quality samples came back negative for asbestos. Officials closed the school closed over a week ago when inspectors from the School District of Philadelphia found damaged asbestos on the campus of Simon Gratz High School, which also houses Simon Gratz Preparatory Middle School. Officials say the three-year reinspection of the district-owned building was in accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act.

PHILADELPHIA - Temple University graduate students who are teaching and research assistants have overwhelmingly ratified a new contract, ending their six-week-long walkout.The Temple University Graduate Students Association, which said Monday evening that the vote was 344 to 8 in favor of ratification, said the new agreement "addressed the union's core demands of increased wages, more affordable dependent health care, reasonable leave policies, and better working conditions."Members last month voted 352 to 30 to reject another proposal that was reached Feb. 18 and to continue the walkout.The new agreement, which the union called "the most robust" in its history and will be in effect until 2026, includes a market adjustment to pay "with significant wage increases in the first year followed by substantial raises in subsequent years," the union said.

PERKASIE, Pa. - The Bucks County Fire Marshal is investigating a house fire that claimed the life of a 75-year-old woman, in Perkasie.Officials said fire crews were called to the 1300 block of Parkridge Court, in the Bucks County town, Sunday morning, just after 10:30, for a building fire.Firefighters got into the residence and found the woman dead in an upstairs bedroom.Crews spent about three and a half hours gaining control of the fire and dousing hot spots.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

UNIVERSITY CITY - Police are investigating a crash that killed a 70-year-old man after he was struck by a car. According to police, the crash occurred on March 8, just before 8 p.m., at the intersection of Civic Center Boulevard and University Avenue. Authorities say a silver or gray SUV hit a 70-year-old man. The driver of the vehicle got out of his car and saw the 70-year-old on the ground before he got back into his car and left the area going south on University Avenue, officials say. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESPolice say the victim was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police say a woman was just trying to get off a bus when she became the victim of a stabbing in the city's Frankford section.The victim, a 44-year-old woman, was stepping off a bus on Pratt and Saul sreets just after midnight when she was stabbed in the forehead by a male suspect.She was transported to a local hospital, where she was placed in stable condition.MORE HEADLINES:Police say a 42-year-old man was taken into custody, and charges are pending at this time.
