Tenerife and Gran Canaria on red alert after 'significant' coronavirus outbreaks

Four Canary Islands, including Tenerife and Gran Canaria, have been put on a "red traffic light" alert from Saturday over fresh coronavirus outbreaks.

The destinations popular with British tourists are on the brink of fresh restrictions. On the islands with a red traffic light alert in place, mass gatherings of more than 10 people will will not be allowed from Saturday.

In hotel, restaurant and terrace establishments, a midnight closing time curfew will be put in plae. No new customers will be allowed after 11pm, and 'non-occupational' day centres must also close.

The red alert affects islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria for at least 15 days, La Gomera for up to 15 days, and Fuerteventura for a week.
