'Anti-drifting' bill introduced days after illegal car meet-ups turned deadly

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia City Council is now taking up the issue of illegal street racing days after illegal car meet-ups across the city culminated in a deadly officer-involved shooting.6th District Councilmember Mike Driscoll introduced an "anti-drifting" bill on Thursday that would define "drifting," as well as "doughnuts" and "spin-outs," in the city’s reckless driving code. The bill would allow penalties of $2,000 for participants, and the ability for police to seize any vehicle that is being used to "drift" on city property.Driscoll says the bill was in the works, but after seeing videos and aftermath of the illegal meet-up at Cottman and Torresdale Avenue in his district last weekend, he wanted to get it out this week.It was co-signed by Councilmember Mark Squilla and Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson, and will now head to committee."We have to send a strong message that we’re not going to tolerate this, and I tell you what, once we start seizing this vehicles, I think we’re going to get their attention," Driscoll said.The introduction of the bill comes on the same day 18-year-old Anthony Allegrini Jr. was laid to rest.

TRENTON, N.J. - A police pursuit that ended in a crash on a New Jersey highway led to the discovery of firearms stolen from a Pennsylvania gun store, sources say.FOX 29 was on scene at Rt. 29 in Trenton near the Calhoun Street Bridge, where Trenton and Middletown Township Police were investigating and collecting evidence. Police say officers were chasing the car before it crashed on the New Jersey highway. Evidence collected from the vehicle's trunk included multiple firearms, both assault rifles and handguns, with tags from a gun store. Sources tell FOX 29's Steve Keeley, that the chase began in Pennsylvania at a gun store in Bucks County. Five people were captured on surveillance video using a Kia, reported stolen out of Philadelphia, to access the second story of the LugerMan gun store in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, sources say. While inside, the suspects broke glass cases and stole the firearms, per police sources. As officers from the Middletown Township Police Department arrived on scene, they chased the Kia and used stop sticks to disable the vehicle. Law enforcement sources say the vehicle made it over the Calhoun Street Bridge, where Trenton Police got involved, capturing three of the five suspects. LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. - A family is grieving the death of a beloved mother and grandmother after the 76-year-old was hit by a school bus and died in La Puente.The California Highway Patrol, which investigates crashes involving school buses, said the incident happened on Monday, May 8 at around 2:20 p.m. on Hacienda Boulevard and Fairgrove Avenue. Blanca Arcelia Guerrero, the mom of 6, was crossing the intersection when she was struck by a Hacienda La Puente Unified school bus. The Medical Examiner's office ruled Guerrero's cause of death as blunt force trauma.

According to the New Castle County Police Department, officers received information about a suspicious package left in Glasgow Park overnight. The park is on the Pulaski Highway in Newark. Officials: Suspect being chased by police crashes into cruiser on I-676 in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - A police chase through Philadelphia ended on a highway after a suspect crashed into police, officials say. According to authorities, police began chasing a suspect in the area of 8th and Vine Streets on Wednesday morning around 1:30 a.m. FOX 29 learned the driver of the vehicle was believed to be involved in a crime, but police have not officially said what they were investigating. PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has announced charges in connection with a shooting and car chase that ended in a crash on I-76 in South Philadelphia. Just before 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, police responded to a report of a shooting at FDR Park and a crash on I-76 near Passyunk Avenue. Officers responded to the scene on the highway and found a Ford SUV and Infiniti Sedan had been involved in a crash.
