Colombo (News1st) – The Chairman of the National Election Commission (NEC) Nimal Punchihewa stated that he has written a letter to the Speaker of Parliament seeking his intervention to secure funds for the 2023 Local Government Election.The Chairman said the letter was dispatched to the Speaker on Friday (24).The NEC announced on Friday (24) that the Local Government Election, which was due to be held on the 9th of March, had been postponed."The election was postponed due to reasons beyond the commission's control," the NEC said.The new date is to be announced on the 3rd of March."A request has been made to the Speaker to intervene to obtain funds from the Treasury, which are necessary to conduct the election," the commission added on Friday.

Temple University Police Sgt. Chris Fitzgerald to be laid to rest

PHILADELPHIA - A funeral is being held for Temple University Police Sergeant Chris Fitzgerald on Friday, marking nearly one week since he was fatally shot while chasing a suspect near campus last week. A viewing and service is being held at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and will be followed by an interment at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Huntingdon Valley. Investigators say Fitzgerald, 31, was on patrol alone on Saturday night around 7 p.m. on the 1700 block of Montgomery Avenue when he saw three young people dressed in dark clothes with masks.

Outpouring of support follows tragic shooting death of Temple officer: 'The community loved Chris'

PHILADELPHIA - An outpouring of support from Philadelphia and beyond has followed in the wake of the tragic shooting death of Temple University police officer Chris Fitzgerald.Officer Fitzgerald was fatally shot during a struggle with a suspect on 18th Street and Montgomery Avenue Saturday night. Authorities later captured the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Miles Pfeffer, at his home in Buckingham Township, over 20 miles away from where the deadly shooting occurred. Family, friends and community members have visited a growing memorial to Officer Fitzgerald in the days since his death.
