The Health Service Executive's National Director of Vaccinations Damien McCallion has said there is "strong evidence" for people aged 65 and over and those who are immunocompromised to receive a second Covid-19 booster.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, he said the rationale for this was that it would prevent hospitilisation for people who contract the illness, as well as preventing severe illness and death.

His comments come as those aged 65 years and older, who are due their second booster vaccine, can now book online for appointments at HSE vaccination centres.

He said there will be a number of access points for people. He also advised that there must be a four month gap since their last booster and if they have contracted the virus recently there must also be a four month gap before getting the booster.
