London's mayor Sadiq Khan said he expects the government will announce later that the city will shortly move to stricter lockdown restrictions. "It is my expectation that the government will today announce that London will shortly be moving into Tier 2 or the high alert level of restrictions," Mr Khan said.
Mr Khan said the virus is spreading rapidly in London and while nobody wants restrictions they are necessary to protect Londoners.
As part of the Tier 2 restrictions households will be banned from mixing indoors, including pubs, from midnight tomorrow. Mr Khan has written on Twitter about measures, including an increase in testing capacity, to protect people living in the capital and bring Covid-19 under control.
