COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lanka has decided to waive demurrage fees of over 900 freight containers detained at the Colombo Port by Sri Lanka Customs for various reasons.During a recent meeting with Sri Lanka Customs State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya noted that over a million kilograms of rice is being held in 79 containers at the Colombo Port, and were not released due to demurrage not being settled.It was decided to release 950 freight containers that are being detained by Sri Lanka Customs, as it has created massive congestion at the Colombo Port.
A cabinet paper with regard to waiving the penalties will be produced to the Cabinet soon, said minister Nimal Siripala during the same meeting..
