Scientists have found a way to spot those Covid patients most likely to end up in intensive care – through a type of cell produced in their bone marrow. The work by the University of Manchester could see patients' blood taken on arrival at hospital to help determine if they are in a higher risk category to become severely ill and suffer multi-organ problems. It could also lead to early treatment to stop these abnormal cells being released into the blood – thought to be triggered by an extreme immune response, known as the cytokine storm. The study, launched in March by immunologists at the university's Lydia Becker Institute, centred on 73 patients at four hospitals - MRI, Salford, Wythenshawe and North Manchester. It focused on white blood.
