Shark kills surfer in gruesome beach attack after he ignored coronavirus lockdown

A shark attack has killed a 26-year-old man who flouted lockdown rules to hit the waves and go surfing. The keen diver had been surfing within 100 yards of Sand Dollar Beach in Northern California, when a shark attacked him.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department said the man was attacked at around 1.30pm, despite the beach being closed between 11am and 5pm amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Emergency services pronounced the victim dead at the scene, and the force confirmed the next of kin has been informed. According to the California State Parks Department, it is unclear what species of shark attacked the man.
