COLOMBO (News 1st);  Sri Lanka will need about $3 billion in external assistance within the next six months to help restore supplies of essential items, including fuel and medicines, to manage a severe economic crisis, the Finance Minister Ali Sabry stated in an interview with Reuters. The Finance Minister, stating that it is indeed a ‘Herculean task’, mentioned that Sri Lanka needs $3 billion in bridge financing while readying itself for negotiations with the IMF.Sri Lanka will look to restructure international sovereign bonds and seek a moratorium on payments, and is confident of negotiating with bondholders for an upcoming $1 billion payment in July.“The entire effort is not to go for a hard default, as we understand the consequences of a hard default.” Minister Sabry stated.J.P.

Morgan analysts estimated this week that Sri Lanka’s gross debt servicing would amount to $7 billion this year, with the current account deficit coming in around $3 billion.Sri Lanka will seek another $500 million credit line from India for fuel, which would suffice for about five weeks of requirements, Sabry said. The government would also seek support from the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank and bilateral partners including China, the United States, Britain and countries in the Middle East.“We know where we are, and the only thing is to fight back,” Sabry said, looking relaxed in a blue T-shirt and jeans, according to Reuters.“We have no choice.” he said.On Friday, a new central bank governor raised interest rates by an unprecedented 700 basis points in a bid to tame rocketing inflation and stabilize the economy. In a effort to fix government finances, Sabry said the country will have to raise tax rates and further increase fuel prices.

Sextortion warning: Cases of predators getting images, money from teenage boys on the rise, FBI says
PHILADELPHIA - The FBI Newark Field Office is warning parents about an increase in reports of sextortion involving teenage boys. According to the agency, sextortion is an online crime that involves contact between a minor and an adult on an online platform, such as a gaming website or social media."The adult predator or scammer convinces the child to share sexual images or video and then threatens to post the content unless the victim sends more content or money," the FBI said. According to federal authorities, the most recent increase in cases mainly targets teenage boys between the age of 14 and 17. The field office says the coercion of a child by an adult to produce child sexual abuse material carries heavy penalties, including a possible life sentence for offenders. "To make victimization stop, children typically have to come forward to someone - normally a parent, teacher, caregiver, or law enforcement," the FBI said. "The embarrassment children feel from the activity where they were coerced or enticed to engage in is what typically prevents them from coming forward." The agency is urging victims to come forward to help stop extortion offenders, who may have hundreds of victims around the world. "We want parents, teachers, other relatives, anyone who is in a child’s life, to be aware," said Special Agent in Charge George M.

New Jersey recreational marijuana sales expected to begin 'within weeks,' report says
(Photo by Andrew Lichtenstein/Corbis via Getty Images) TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey officials have given approval to seven companies to sell recreational marijuana to adults meaning sales could start within weeks, according to The New York Times. The move comes more than a year after voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot question to legalize adult use of the drug.Early last year, Democratic Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation to set up a recreational marijuana marketplace. At the time of the signing, Murphy explained that by establishing a recreational marijuana marketplace, the economy statewide would flourish as new jobs would be created. On Monday, New Jersey’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission, made up of five members, gave seven medical-marijuana companies final approval to start selling their products to all adults, according to NYT. The development makes New Jersey only the second state on the East Coast to fully authorize cannabis sales to all adults. The seven companies are permitted to begin selling recreational cannabis for adult use as soon as each company pays more than $1 million in fees associated with the expanded licenses and meets other requirements to obtain the license. ___DOWNLOAD: FOX 29 NEWS APPSUBSCRIBE: Good Day Digest Newsletter | FOX 29 Philly on YouTubeAdvertisementFOLLOW: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter

‘GotaGoGama’ protest village pops up as protestors occupy Galle Face
COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan protestors who occupied the Galle Face stretch since Saturday (9) against the President and his government have also now set up a camp named ‘Gota-Go-Gama’ (GotaGoGama). The camp was set up on Saturday (9) night with just a few tents, and the number shot up to over two dozen on Sunday (10) night.Gota-Go-Gama is like a small model village, it has all the basic requirements including free food, water, toilets, and even a make ship medical camp for health emergencies.Debt in billions due to years of accumulated borrowings, record inflation, lack of foreign currency, crucial sectors witnessing a sharp fall in demand thanks to the pandemic, and the alleged government mismanagement are among the reasons that have dragged Sri Lanka into not just an unprecedented economic crisis but also a massive political turmoil.Meanwhile, the ruling coalition led by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna lost the majority in the Parliament. The opposition rejected an offer by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who had called to form a ‘unity government’ following the resignation of 26 ministers of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Cabinet amid violent protests.People are on the roads protesting against their government amid a severe shortage of fuel, essentials, and power outages.Gota-Go-Gama was set up by the protestors to strengthen their efforts to demand President Rajapaksa resign.
