COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Power and Energy says that a vessel carrying 35,000 to 40,000 MT of petrol is scheduled to reach the country this week.A Spokesperson to the Ministry says an advance payment was already made to the Petrol cargo, and the full payment will be made once the ship reaches the country..

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Two players from the Sri Lanka Navy, namely Woman Leading Seaman, Deepika Abeykoon (WVS 66974) and Woman Able Seaman Hasitha Mendis (WV 76519) represented the victorious Sri Lanka team that went on to win the Asian Netball Championship title. In recognition of their stellar performances, which ultimately brought much glory to the Navy and the Nation, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne felicitated the players and advanced them to the next respective rates during a brief ceremony held in this regard at the Navy Headquarters yesterday (15). In addition, the 02 players were also presented with cash rewards worth Rs. 250,000.00 each, motivating them to bring out the best from the sportspersons in the Navy.Sri Lanka won the Championship undefeated on 11th September 2022 by edging out the host Singapore 63-53 in the finals of the 12th Asian Netball Championship held in Singapore, with the participation of 11 Asian countries.After the arrival of the champion team on the island, the 02 Navy players called on Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne at the Navy Headquarters yesterday (15). During the brief interaction, the Commander of the Navy congratulated the 02 athletes on this significant feat, which brought much credit to the Navy and pride to the Nation. Fittingly, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne advanced the two athletes to their subsequent rates in service and presented them with cash incentives worth Rs.

COLOMBO (News 1st); The UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery delivering his report to the UN Human Rights Council raised concern about the living conditions of Sri Lankan workers, especially in tea plantations.Tomoya Obokata, the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery speaking to the 51st Regular Session of Human Rights Council said one of the main concerns in Sri Lanka was the living conditions of Sri Lankan workers."In a tea plantation, for example, I was disturbed to learn that women generally have to work twice as long as men and under the same salary due to the low wages of plucking tea leaves," he added.The UN Special Rapporteur said that he also found that cast-based discrimination persists in some areas of the country where workers experience similar obstacles, in addition to identified indicators of forced labor in the garment industry and domestic work, among others. "A major issue of concern is sexual harassment and violence against female workers which are not often reported due to fear of reprisals and a lack of trust in existing complaints mechanisms," he said adding that many workers are also exploited by microfinancing companies as their low wages do not align with the rising cost of living in Sri Lanka. The UN Special Rapporteur stressed that furthermore needs to be done to protect Sri Lankan nationals who travel abroad to work."I discovered that Sri Lanka diplomatic commissions are not always well equipped to protect Sri Lankan migrant workers who have been exploited and there is scope to improve reintegration and support programs," said the UN Special Rapporteur.Sri Lanka also responded to the concerns raised by the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of

Navy workshop on Coral Conservation
COLOMBO (News 1st); A workshop on “Coral Species Identification and Reef Restoration” intending to broaden the scope of Navy divers, was successfully held at the Command Diving & Salvage Unit (East) in Naval Dockyard Trincomalee and Sandy Bay on 13th and 14th September 2022.The workshop which covered practical and theoretical aspects was conducted by prominent marine biologists and coral restoration experts.The coral ecosystem makes a huge contribution to preserving the biodiversity of the marine environment. Sri Lanka Navy has commenced a Coral Conservation Project and various other initiatives to reduce the damage to this precious coral ecosystem due to natural causes and human activities. Under that, the Navy is expected to restore and conserve the coral ecosystem by creating artificial concrete reefs and growing corals on them, providing breeding sites for fish.The corals that were placed on the artificial concrete reefs previously, under the Navy Coral Conservation Project are currently growing successfully. In the future, opportunities will be open for local and foreign divers to engage in recreational diving at those sites and that will also be a major boost for the promotion of the tourism sector in due course.Ten officers and forty sailors attached to the Sri Lanka Navy’s Diving Unit participated in the workshop, picking the brain of experts on identification and restoration procedures of coral species.

Cops foil abduction of woman; Two men arrested
COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lanka Police said that two men were arrested on Wednesday (14) morning for abducting a woman and making a getaway in a car.The suspects were arrested by the Baddagama Police Officers.Sri Lanka Police said that the woman in question was traveling to an apparel factory in Dikwella, where she was employed.She was abducted by the men in a car, while en route to work.The men had proceeded to the Baddegama Exit on the Southern Expressway and Police Officers manning the post, had noticed that the woman's mouth was covered by the hand of one of the men seated at the back.The Police Officers informed the Baddegama Traffic Police Division and an operation was launched to stop the vehicle in Baddegama Town.Before stopping the car, police officers who in pursuit of the vehicle had observed that the back doors were locked, and a man was forcibly holding on to the woman at knifepoint.Police Officers had also noticed a tussle between the abductor and victim, said the Police statement.Thereafter, a Police Sergeant opened fire into the sky and broke the back-door windows of the car, pulling out the suspect, and the woman.Both were admitted to the Baddegama Hospital for injuries.The 23-year-old driver of the car was arrested and the car was seized.Sri Lanka Police said that the abduction was the result of an illicit affair, however, investigations are on

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The resolution to constitute the Parliament Committee called the "National Council" has now been added to the Addendum to the Order Book for September 20th.Thus, the National Council will consist of the Speaker as the Chair, the Prime Minister, the Leader of the House of Parliament, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, the Chief Government Whip, and not more than thirty-five Members of Parliament representing the Ninth Parliament from recognized Political Parties in Sri Lanka as determined by the Leaders of the Political Parties.Accordingly, the National Council shall have the jurisdiction and general responsibilities in order to;• Determine the general priorities of Parliament to guide the formulation of short, medium, and long-term national policies;• Agree on short and medium-term common minimum programs in respect of the stabilization of the economy; • Arrange special meetings with the Ministers of the Cabinet of Ministers, the National Council, the Chairpersons of the Special Committees, and Youth observers of Youth Organizations.The National Council shall have powers to request reports from Sectoral Oversight Committees, The Committee on Public Finance, The Committee on Public Accounts, The Committee on Public Enterprises, The Committee on Banking and Financial Services, The Committee on Ways and Means, The Committee on Economic Stabilization; and Any Committee controlling Public Finance.The Addendum to the Order Book on the above can be obtain via the below link.
